When we were there last week, USA Transfers picked us up to go to the air port. I noticed they had a very nice car seat strapped into the Van, I assume for a pick up later that day. Looked like a modern, safe version. My youngest son was 3 on his first trip. He loved it! Use lots of sunscreen.

We watched as a family was denied boarding to go to Cancun because they didn't have a passport for one of their young children. It was very disturbing. There was nothing that anyone could do. In 2004 the US started the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) requiring all people tarveling to Mexico by air to posess a valid passport. If you are traveling by land or sea you could get by with a "passport card" but not when traveling by air. Air travel still requires a passport for all ages while young children might be able to get by with proof of citizenship (birth cert) if they are travling by land or sea

We have always gate checked our own carseats. I'd just do whatever you normally do in the states. Sometime with car rentals/private transport you get nice carseats and sometimes you get carseats that you wouldn't want to touch let alone put a kid in. We have never wanted to take the chance. Passports are necessary. Also, like the other poster said, children's tylenol, benedryl, thermometer, etc. It is the same stuff that I would travel with in the states. Heck, even when we drive two hours from our house to stay the night we bring all that stuff. Never know when you will need it and when you do you don't want to be looking around in a new place for it. A few weeks ago we spent the weekend in the city and I had my regular kids travel medicine pack with me. I can't tell you how many times I've packed all those meds and never used it but this past weekend my youngest woke up in the middle of the night with a 102 fever and wouldn't stop crying. I was SO glad I had children's ibuprofen and I'm sure the guests in the neighboring room were too. Turns out he had strep throat. Can happen anywhere. We like to travel with our kids and we always travel prepared
