OK i know this may have been talked out but when I look to rent a car online. most car rentals do not give cdw with 0 deductable.. am I missing something? I can buy just liablility and use credit care insurance but was looking for full coverage and a decent rate. got some really good rates for May but with 1500 deductable. any ideas of what is going on? has there been a change on the website on insurances?
thanks for any thoughts

I don't know if this is the best place, but I have rented from Caribbean for several years now. They do offer CDW with 0 deductable. They also give 5% loco gringo discount.
Others like Easyway.
I reserved for Feb 2014, just to lock in with a quoted rate. I don't have flights yet, but I do have reservations in 2 different places for 18 days.

At least check it out.

I just asked Tulum Car Rental for zero deductible (quote $10 extra per day) - same company as Caribbean

Still less than Easyway

Zero deductible is no longer free. If you want it you have to get the EPC extra protection coverage. Each company is a different price for that.

It is my understanding that if I purchase CDW from rental company then my Avion Visa insurance becomes secondary insurance and covers the deductible if a claim is made, therefore I shouldn't have to pay extra to get a zero deductible. Am i wrong on this??
Also, how much 3rd Party liability insurance is recommended? I see that Tulum Car Rentals covers up to 80,000 USD.

I used Easyway car rentals. They were awesome. I got 10 percent off for using my Automobile membership card, CAA card. AMA card where I live. They didn't even ask to see it either. lol

Guy there told me next time I go, if I like or join their facebook page and the twitter one and something else, can't remember what it was, but they will give 15 percent off. It's on the webpage somewhere. So anyways, I got a car for 15 days for 600 dollars in the end. Started out at 745 dollars with the zero deductible add-on. Got the discount on-line and more discount there in person.

If you don't ask to get it cheaper, it won't happen.

There's my 2 cents.

Also, that was in Feb 2013

Cheers!

Doug

thanks for everyone's replies. Tulum car rental has a great one week car rental for $120 includes everything on the website BUT the $1500 deductable insurance. this is called EPC insurance. the problem I have is they don't offer it on there website SOOOOOOOOOOO when you get to the car rental either you think you have full insurance or you have to pay extra. sundog indicated that it is $10 a day. now it that with tax included?? that still would be an ok deal. I think my frustration is of the recent change of the $1500 deductable thing on CDW.

on the idea of using your insurance card for CDW. you have to wave ALL the CDW at the car rental to get the insurance with your card. you can't just get EPC($1500 DEDUCTABLE) insurance with my credit card. And the tulum, cancun car rental agencies will not offer it without the CDW.
so a good option for me is to go with easyway and get liabiltiy insurance and wave thier CDW use my credit card insurance and cross my fingers that I don;t have to deal with an accident.

Easyway's deductible is only $500 I think, so that's a lot better than the others.

Mono, heads up buddy...

Liability coverage protects you against any damage or injury you cause to others (not to the rental car) and there always are limits (read the wording on your CC coverage) If you don't have coverage they will put you in jail until you pay in full.

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) protects the rental car against damage or loss, CC's will include some level of collision and theft protection (you must use the CC to rent your car usually to trigger coverage) A CDW may also include coverage for costs that occur after an accident, such as towing charges, storage and "loss-of-use" fees, which compensate the rental agency for the amount of time the damaged car is out of service for repair. If you are in a collision this could cost you anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars.

Extended Protection Coverage (EPC) is an upgrade to the Collision insurance (CDW) which could lessen your deductible or make it 0% (pending the contract terms) - shoot the rental company a email, ask for a full quote with zero (0) deductible taxes included.

Be very careful about reading the wording in AAA or CC coverage's out of the country. If using as your CC as primary auto rental coverage check the limits. Another suggestion is to make sure your policy in Spanish cause in the heat of the accident, when the police are reviewing your coverage's, if the policy is not in Spanish you may still end up in jail. What about all those other third party cars on the road in Mexico which do not have any insurance? BTW, CC coverage's reimburse expenses after you are back in your home country.... Is it worth the hassle, NO....For a few extra bucks? My 2 cents... Please, don't cross your fingers and SKIMP on Insurance in Mexico! Rather see you on the beach than messing around with insurance or mxn lawyers. You've earned the vacation, protect it.

Also, if anyone is injured you have to pay lost wages and all that stuff. And all the damage to people/cars/ buildings must be paid in cash or you will remain in jail.

Sure, you may have CC coverage, but that will do you no good at the time. That is between you and your insurer and is settled later. At the time of damage you cannot leave mexico without paying the cash up front.

When purchasing all of the insurances from the rental company can you request how much 3rd party liability you want and what dollar amount would you recommend?
I read that Tulum Car Rental's is $80,000 USD. Should I be asking for more?

So...America/Continental/Caribbean Rent a Car are ALL back to EPC included in their quotes. Wonder if they are just doing this (charging extra for zero deductible) for High season peaks...?

I didn't read the whole thread so excuse me if this has been said. You can use your cc ins OR the rental ins. If you use the rental ins your cc ins is void. You also have to cover all expenses out of pocket and try and get reimbursed by your cc company. I spent a long time on the phone (over 30 minutes) with Visa and they sent me an authorization letter to use their coverage but informed of the reimbursement situation and unless you are a millionaire or an attorney or both, just get the rental car ins.
The high season thing makes perfect sense but I don't know if it's accurate. With the huge increase of inexperienced drivers it sounds like something I would do if I owned the company

Another "gotcha" is that your credit card insurance only pays for damage or theft to the rented vehicle. Unless I'm mistaken, it pays nothing for damages to the other car or for injuries to third parties, i.e. nothing for lost wages, medical bills, etc. You still need the rental car company liability insurance for that.
