Hello, My first question, is Mass in the Pueblo still at 5:00 on Saturdays? Second question, do the locals care if we walk through the Pueblo? I have heard such varied reports that locals don't like selling us stuff to loving us and wanting to help. This sounds ridiculous even as I write it, but I have heard a lot on both sides of this issue!

I don't have the time for mass, and yes you can walk through the pueblo....not a problem.

Mass is at 8 pm on Saturday. Found this out when going for run, stopping in the Pueblo to check mass times. None were posted so I asked some locals. They were very kind and seemed to appreciate my limited Spanish.

Gardener, We just returned from Akumal monday. We went to mass two saturdays in a row and both were at 5 PM. We also walked the pueblo streets often in 9 days and everyone was nice! Also ate at a little place called Taco Maya .Great food and cheap . Just west of Natys.

Mass in sept of 2011 and 2012 was at 5:00.. from the mass it appeared to be 'childrens' mass' as the kids were up front and involved. walking around the pueblo is a must.. the people there are great. make sure and stop in the local stores and buy a beer soda water.. stop at a local bar and have a drink.. you'll love it!!

I think that we get so accustomed to the bold hawkers in PDC and the overly friendly , smiley faced , waiters from tourist restaurants and such that when we are treated as just another stranger in a normal village setting it seems unfriendly in comparison . Most of these folks wouldn't dream of invading your privacy with a carnival hawker routine to buy their goods and many speak little english to communicate with confidence . We sat at a restaurant watching a teenager working his skateboard with his church clothes on . He noticed us watching him and gave it his best effort until his little sister came and saved him from being late for church . It certainly appeared that when they got in the line with their parents that he was blaming her for being late . A little silent theatre , just for us .

We stop in small towns and pueblos all over the peninsula. I've never felt like we were unwelcome anywhere.

Thanks everyone! One group of people said that it was like Harlem and they didn't belong there and the people were hostile. I understand that they don't have the same housing as we do, but hostility? That's why I asked. Another group said they went to buy some groceries and they were refused items to buy. I wonder if they just misunderstood? The people that come over to work are so nice, I had a hard time reconciling the two.

never had a problem with people, enjoyed waking around EXCEPT when we walked on the next south street off the main drag. most every house had a dog and they were barking pretty intensely that if they were not tied up, I would be nervous. it seemed they were all contained but I imagine that they could protective. around main drag, natys, school, no problem!
