We will be bringing our two boys, 8 and 10, next week to Akumal. I've looked online at Hidden Worlds and Dos Ojos. They both look neat because of the caves. Does anyone have a recommendation for one over the other?

They are 180 out from each other. Dos Ojos is just (fantastic) cenote with two sections one with a bat cave and the other a large open cavern. There are no faciltities other than what you bring with you. Hidden Worlds is a Rivera Maya Mexican amusement park, zip lines etc.. I owuld think that the kids would enjoy Hidden Worlds much more as there is more to do there.
We've been to Dos Ojos but Hidden Worlds isn't our style. these are from Dos Ojos

Im going to say no to Hidden worlds for your 8 and 10 year old.
here is my link from my trip report. It would be extremely difficult for your kids to do the skybike. Im an adult and i found it difficult sometimes when we were on an incline .. and from what they noted to me this is the only way to get to the cenote after the bumpy road drive to get there - but i could be wrong maybe they offer just the cenote
My other partners in crime did the Dos Ojos and they absolutely loved it...

here is the link for you to read and see small blurb and a few photos >>>> go here

Unless they have changed Hidden worlds in 4 years? - i would rather recommend Xel Ha or Xcaret as a family event ... Xel Ha has Ziplines and Xcaret has a super cool Snuba you can all do. I am also going to advise to take snacks/food in a collapsable cooler as food and bevies do get expensive in the parks

Last week I was chatting up with our driver who claims that his favorite thing in the world is snorkeling. Since he is a local and I am not, I asked him where he thought was the very best snorkeling in RM. Without hesitation he replied Dos Ojos. Though I've never been there myself, after our conversation it definitely found a place on my bucket list.
He said that it's pretty deep and popular with scuba divers as well. While snorkeling at the top your eyes are naturally drawn to the divers' lights at the bottom. It's apparantly quite remarkable. When exiting there is a natural formation that resembles eyes and that's why it's called Dos Ojos.

All this second hand but hopefully you'll find it helpful.

There is a 70 meter underwater tunnel that connects the Two Eyes. We were snorkling in the cave and could see the divers heading off. Like I said I haven't been to Hidden Worlds. It's called Two Eyes becuase it is two caverns connected by an underwater tunnel.

That makes sense. (the name's origin) I probably misunderstood him.

Dos Ojos is locally own.
You pau about 100 pesso at the gate and have to go 2-3 miles to the cenote.
We had rental car but I think that they provide transportation. ( Does anybody know?).
So you save about $200 (for 4) and experience real stuff not manufactured for gringos Hidden Word.

We drove in last January but they told us we couldn't go into the bat cave without a guide. Now that I've been there with a guide I might try and do it on my own this time. The guide was about $30. I thought that was waaaaaaaaaay too much and they came down a little bit but they had to find someone willing to take us for the reduced price. It was a cool cenote.

With boys 8 and 10, you'd better ask them first; if they mind the dark...and can and do want to snorkel. Dos Ojos is a cave, and you will need a flashlight to snorkel through it.

Here's a link to my photos from 2010 snorkel through there. Lucy had her local friend take us on a private snorkel through the cave...some tight spots in some parts.

I would think the best thing you can do, is show the kids webpages for; Dos Ojos, Hidden Worlds and Xel Ha, and Xcaret. My vote for kids that age would be Xel Ha. While admissions can be very pricey, if you want something just for swimming/snorkeling, you could always take them to Garden of Eden cenote and let them jump in from the edge, and then climb the tree and jump into the cenote!

We were at Hidden Worlds a few weeks ago and loved it. I'd echo the other comments about the suitability of it for your kids though. The Sky Cycle has a bit of an uphill section which might be difficult for them. Also, I don't know if they'd be allowed on the 'roller coaster' zip line. The buggy ride from the entrance to the zip lines was pretty fun, the kids might get a kick out of that.

But without the skycycle and the roller coaster zip line, there's basically only one other zip line and a cenote swim. Might make more sense to just do Dos Ojos (we didn't go to Dos Ojos but have heard good things).

Thank you all for the great information! I think we'll hit Dos Ojos on this trip, and plan for Hidden Worlds when they are old enough to do the zip line and maneuver the sky cycle. Can't wait to get there!

Did the Dos Ojos dive with my brother awhile back on a day when it was too rough for the Akumal dive outfits to go out. I would recommend it to divers as a unique experience and a great freshwater soak for gear just before heading back home.

We're headed down for our 4th visit to Akumal on April 3rd. We've been to Hidden Worlds, but I'm not aware of how to get to Dos Ojos directly. Can someone provide directions? Thanks.

Question:

There are two connected Cenotes. Are you able to swim (snorkel) between the two?

If snorkeling and cannot go between the two, can you walk over and jump in and snorkel in the second cenote?

The underwater cave is too long to snorkle. The two entrances are different. One of them you can snorkle through an area with very little headroom and around some great formations, the bat cave. The first cavern is more like a large pool, it is the other end of the tunnel. You can walk between them. They told us we had to have a guide to go into the bat cave. I don't know if it is required but we got a guide anyway. Glad we did as we wouldn't have seen the entire cave if we went on our own. It was a bit pricey for the guide but was pretty cool.
The west cenote is the more interesting one. The distance from the parking area to the west cenote is about 200 meters. The site itself is a couple of kilometers from the highway. The entrance from 307 is one kilometer south of Xel Ha.

I've dove Dos Ojos several times and we snorkelled it as a family a couple of times

There are 2 separate snorkels. The first eye is a ( shaped pond which goes to about 20 feet deep at the deepest. It is a lovely beginner snorkel for anyone. If you duck under the water you can see the light from the other eye. You CANNOT snorkel from one to the other.

The second eye is a couple of hundred yards walk away. It is a C shape. A beginner snorkeller can happily and safely snorkel along the whole perimeter of the C. It is a little shallower then the first but is longer end to end. You can see the beautiful cave formations from both eyes.

If you want to do someting more advanced you can take the bat cave tour from the second eye. Even, after having dove the bat cave several times and having taking a guided snorkeling tour, I would not snorkel it on my own. The passage to the bat cave is lovely but not for the claustrophobic. In some places there is only about a foot or so of space between the top of the water and the top of the cave. It is also a bit of a winding passage. Once in the bat cave the guide will guide you around the perimeter of the cave and then back to the second eye again. The bat cave has a 5 foor diameter hole in the top that lets in light. My teenagers loved it but they are reasonably experienced snorkelers.

You can see and look down the hole to the bat cave from the surface by leaving the Dos Ojos property and going onto the Hidden Worlds property. It is only a few feet in. There is an old rustry ladder that used to lead into the bat cave.

Dos Ojos is an other-worldly place. It's not hard to understand why they filmed the IMAX movie in this system.

For divers they do 2 guided cavern tours. The first starts in the first eye and proceeds underground/water to the second eye. They then follow a roundabout path around part of the perimeter of the second eye to the right and then back to the first eye again. They call this the barbie line because there is a barbie doll tied to the line part way around.

The second tour also starts in the first eye and also proceeds under the water to the second eye. For this one they proceed to the left at the second eye and into the bat cave. It goes around the bat cave and then back again.

Not long ago Hidden Worlds used to start Dos Ojos tours in the bat cave and you would start by going down the rusty ladder. Apparently that entrance is no longer considered safe so I would use caution having a look i.e. if you see a whole bus tour looking down the hole at once don't go near it
