OK, so it's pre-Wilma, 2005, off Fiesta Americana, Cozumel. Snorkeling relatively far out when I see an undulating. slowly moving, gigantic "carpet" of fish swimming along the bottom toward the north. There were at least several thousand of them, brownish grey in color and swimming in perfect synchrony, an incredible sight which other snorkelers excitedly pointed out.
After Wilma I did search for them but only found a few, maybe less than a hundred, in a small group. Whatever they were, I hope they come back.

Nice. I wonder if it was a bait ball of sardines. For the first time in years, thousands upon thousands arrived in Akumal Bay in Feb. Amidst them was a 6-7' barracuda snacking away. The pelicans put on quite a show torpedo diving to feed on them as well. By the end of our trip the bait ball was greatly reduced. They really are on the bottom of the food chain out there.
