We have always stayed at the ABR when we come to Akumal, we just did our first condo stay in Isla Mujeres in February. We are debating on staying back in the Akumal area next year and curious about the condo's in the Akumal area, we could rent a golf cart for the week we are there so we have transportation (we have no desire to rent a car). We are looking at the HAC (quite seriously) but have been looking at some of the condo options as well. Do the condos on Halfmoon Bay also have security or from those who stay do you feel this is a non-issue. I don't plan on bringing anything of great value along...just snorkel gear and cameras. I also don't plan on cooking much, just want a cold fridge for cervesas and snacks, plan on buzzing around the area to enjoy the cuisine. We don't need anything fancy (obviously, I love the ABR) want clean with an ocean view and a beach, good snorkeling and easy to get around and we enjoy meeting new people. I have been searching older threads just not finding what I'm looking for. Again, be patient with me! we are extremely new to the condo scene, we have always felt safe traveling around the Akumal area, just wondering about your condo experiences and where you love staying, we aren't big pool people, we pretty much stay on the beach, but we would like a restaurant /bar nearby. HAC is on the short list...I am overwhelmed with all the condo options on LG.... what do you think????

Here ya go, Crunch and Tomas trip report......

http://forums.locogringo.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1421363&mpage=1&key=Vista%2Cdel%2CMar

Personally, we have stayed in several different condos on HMB and would gladly stay in any of them again. We have had friends visit us who were staying at HAC at the same time and they all thought the condos were much nicer than HAC and for about the same price.
You can't go wrong with the condo listings here on LG.

As for security, there are security guards who patrol the HMB area at night. That being said, we still prefer a 2nd story condo just to ease our minds about possible petty theft.

All the condos have security. You don't see them at night much but they are very much present. And enjoy ice cream on a hot night if you bring it to them. We have never ever had a single issue at a condo on HMB.

Look at Vista del Mar studios and condos. They have very good pricing.

If you want to go upscale look at Playa Caribe.

You really cannot go wrong though. All the condos I have seen on HMB are really nice.

Hola-

We stayed at a few and really liked Seven Seas condos on S. Akumal Bay. Easy walk into main beach area. Salud!

Thanks everyone.....I had to chuckle I remember reading that trip report...sure made me hungry once again! Great report! Thanks for the info, I am finding a huge amount of condo options! Love it! also there is a secure place to park the golf carts at VDM? Since we will be using the golf carts as transportation for the week. I think I will love the Halfmoon Bay area and so close to Akumal Bay, the best of both worlds!

So will your transfer driver stop somewhere on your way down to Akumal to pick up some supplies or do you all rely on the stores in Akumal???

Las Casitas are wonderful. You can book thru LC. I think they might be listed under villas for some reason. We stayed there in Jan and LOVED it there. We were 2 couples so cost was shared. Also just returned from a last minute 4 day trip and stayed in a condo on Half Moon Bay (found privately) and loved that too. Prices are a little more affordable on HMB compared to Las Casitas. We rented Bikes to get around and that worked great too. Bikes $8/day. If we can find another couple to travel next winter we will definitely look at Las Casitas again.

Yes. To plug the cart in at night for recharging there is an outlet right there by the office near the bike rack and there is also an outlet across the road by the little hut I call "The Wood Shop". It's where the carpenters work on whatever projects they are working on for the condo/hotel. Just ask Daisy at the front office and she'll show you the options.

Don't forget to pick out a nice coconut to use as a chock if the parking brake on the cart does not work.

Love Love VDM!!! Great choice! They have a great facility right in the middle of HMB and you can rent bikes at the front desk for the week.

I've parked in the lot at Playa Caribe (actually across the street) for weeks while we are there. Security has not been an issue. The entire HMB road is very well patrolled all night by a very efficient team. I go out and practice my Spanish with them at night. Most of the time you won't see them but that is the beauty of good security.

We are at VDM Hotel in May and sounds like we will love it. We stayed at HAC and Las Casitas also and both were excellent! Las Casitas are two bedroom condos and even though we only needed one room at 50 percent off in September it was worth it. Both of those are in walking distance of so many good places to eat. VDM will be a change, but really looking forward to it.

VDM is our home away from home. I went alone and felt very safe in the hotel. HMB is nice and quiet, one boat from the dive shop and snorkelers in the water, La Buena Vida is our favorite restaurant, it's the sister restaurant of the hotel. The walk to Akumal Bay is very easy, no fear in walking alone.

We stayed at The Reef on HMB in 2011, and yes there were guards. One fella even came & woke us up (at our request) to see a turtle laying her eggs!
