Nice to be back here checking in------it's been too long! We are thinking of staying on Isla Mujerus. My questions are-where would you stay that's economical-and where would you eat that is reasonable? We're not "5-star" diners.

Also, How is he grocery shopping on the island? and fishing excursions?

We're planning an end of May trip, maybe into June depending on the work schedule, which is generally slower than it is November through March!

Hola-

We stayed at Playa Media Luna on the north end of Isla. Easy walk to restaurants etc... and there are grocery stores also within walking distance. If you like seafood- check out Casa del Tix n Chic (foremerly Playa Lancheros) on the south end of Isla near Garrafon Park. Salud!

Seafood, steaks, tacos, we're pretty open to variety! Pricing similar to Akumal and or Tulum ?

I felt like it's cheaper there in general! All the little seafood restaurants by the ferry dock have shrimp tacos and a beer for about 5 bucks! Look at Villa Ki'in... cheap clean rooms on the laggoon by Avalon and near North Beach. I love Isla Mujeres! Not the snorkleing experience Akumal is, but has it'sown unique vibe!

We stayed at Villa Ki'in last December and loved it. Just as FG said, cheap clean rooms and close to everything. One of may favorites restaurants is Bally Hoo over by the ferry docks. Sunset Grill is nice on Playa Norte for a special dinner.

Enjoy your stay! Dive or snorkel the MUSA (underwater sculpture museum)

Going back mid-May myself, been a few years, but read they opened a new Chedraui supermarket last year mid island. Enjoy! I liked Miramar for seafood but this trip going to give Ballyhoo a try as well.

We actually did our first ever trip to Isla in February, there are so many little places for great food at cheap prices all within walking distance of Norte beach, Poc Chuk has great food at bargain prices. We thought Bally Hoo right on the pier was very reasonable too! The beauty of Isla is that most places post their prices of meals right out front of their establishments....if one doesn't look good to you just keep on walking you will find one! Isla is a fun little place and was a great experience, but we did miss the snorkeling........that being said I look forward to going back again sometime!

I always think Playa Media Luna looked like such a great choice....do you have a trip report somewhere or pics?

For some reason, I recently thought I saw something that said they closed (I hope not). A few months back I sent a message to Playa del Secreto which USED to be a small boutique-ish type hotel and the response I got was that they are no longer that type resort. Now, they have split up to being something like a four-plex and only sell by the week (oriented towards larger group being able to stay together) I am not sure I still have the email but it was too expensive for us and we don't have a 'group' to utilize it. It was something like $3k a week maybe. It was my understanding a few yrs back when I investigated that they were next door to Playa Media Luna. Thanks for any info and you can PM me if we don't want to hijack this thread

I got a great deal thru Living Social Escapes to Villa Rolandi.    **** usually has escapes too.  Normally I couldn't/wouldn't afford that place but it was a killer deal @ 68% off.  It will be my first visit to Isla.  Looking forward to it in May.  Altho I recommend booking thru LG if you can, but when you find a great deal...

I never did find the deal on Social Living for Villa Rolandi, and the deals I did find when I researched them heavily weren't deemed 'worthy' by me

If I had found the deal for Villa Rolandi when I had the $ or I find the deal at a time when I have $, I will do it because it is on my bucket list. I am too young to have a bucket list. What nonsense. LOL

There are many places to stay on Isla! I have been staying at Posada del Mar for many years! They have, in tha last three years, added rooms,a new pool & palapa bar! Great location, nice people & very good prices! If you go,please tell Romey, the longtime bartender, hello! You can get a Mapchick Isla map online sent to your door! This one of the best map/guides I have ever seen! I hope this helps! Enjoy!
PS Posada has a website & booking office in Florida! My favorite rooms are in the hotel office bldg!

Have stayed on Isla at Hotel cabanas maria del mar & Ixchel beach hotel..both on playa norte . Both very nice & on the beach . Dozens of places to eat from 5 star to lunchera to food carts . Two large grocery stores . Plenty of fishing excursions . Get a Map Chick map and you should be good to go ! Spent one week in Isla & one week in Akumal the last two years . Both have pluses that the other doesn't so we like doing both .Enjoy .

Laura Mapchick is working on their new Isla map, should be out hopefully next month. Keep an eye on her website mapchick.com or their main website cancunmap.com.
Looking forward to trying someplace new this trip, in the past I always stayed at Cabanas Maria del Mar, although the first trip we stayed at Playa Media Luna which was great.
Have a wonderful trip

ORIGINAL: Jamie ...seafood but this trip going to give Ballyhoo a try as well.

Bally Hoo has EXCELLENT fish tacos, and the strongest margaritas on Isla!!! Just 2 and you will weeble wobble all the way home!

Media Luna Hotel is still there. They acquired the Media Luna Bungalows next door a couple years ago, and have incorporated it into the property.

We have been to Isla many times, and it was where we first discovered the 'Roo. We are going in May, staying at Avalon Reef. The cove there is a great little snorkel. King's Pool is on the Avalon property and is also a fun little place. Ali & I snorkel in area most tourists do not go, such as around Avalon Point to Media Luna Beach, and along the reef near the airport strip, but you can find good snorkeling also near Garrafon Park. You can go to Castilla de Garrafon, right next door to the "Park" where the it's practically free! ($5?) The fish don't heed the boundary lines! LOL

Whale Shark season in June - Sept. Better in July, Aug & Sept, tho. I recommend Capitan Tony for excursions. He does Whale Shark & snorkel trips to Isla Contoy, where he grew up as the son of the lighthouse keeper. FB page: https://www.facebook.com/CapitanTonys?fref=ts

Make sure to check out Miguel's Moonlite, near the town square. Miguel:

Restaurant outside:

Do get Mapchick's Map! The loncherias by the market have excellent food! Many people go there for b'fast, but the lunches are great as well!

You will LOVE Playa Norte! I like the area by Buho's for the palm trees & hammocks!

We love staying at Ixchel condos on the north beach. The beach is the best for swimming, the local market is about half a block and the mom and pop cafes there are super cheap and wonderful...breakie for about $3. The ferry is about five minutes away, and the restaurants all within walking distance. We rent a golf cart and drive to the new Chedrui on the south end of town. Fun drive, and a great store. There is also a very small grocery store on the square, but the new one is great. If you cook part of your meals, you can save a bundle.

No. There are only a few places with snorkeling and it does not compare unless you take a panga trip. That is the only reason we have not been back for several years. However, there are many other awesome things about Isla Mujeres.
