Hi All! Have not been on the board for a while, but holiday season is nearing. I know this question pops up all the time, so forgive me if it is a recent repeat. I used to buy Hawaiian Tropic Brand Biodegradeable Sunscreen at Walmart here in southern Ontario, Canada. This year I can't find it and they don't seem to carry any biodegradeable brands. Could anyone tell me where I could purchase environmentally friendly sunscreen in my area? Muchas Gracias!

We got ours on Amazon. Just be careful because I think a lot that SAY they're reef safe really aren't. I got one for my pale self at Target, a Neutrogena one with none of the bad ingredients. It was SPF 60+, though, so my husband wouldn't come near it.

Do be aware that it will stain clothes and bathing suits. I had good luck getting it out with Dawn. It's pasty, and it doesn't soak in like the stuff you're probably used to. It was definitely an adjustment, but worth it to do our part.

Second vote for Mexitan. I love how the small one comes w/ a little clip you can attach to your backpack or beach bag.

Thank your being aware of the sunscreen problem.

For anyone who would like to know more:
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/pf/82923650.html
http://www.eturbonews.com/1414/tourist-sunscreen-%E2%80%98killing-coral-reefs%E2%80%99

There are several brands. We use http://www.mexitan.com/ It doesn't rub in well, but it works.

To see whether your biodegradable sunscreen is safe for the reef, check for these bad ingredients:
PABA
octinoxate
oxybenzone
4-methylbenzylidene camphor
oils
chemicals
the preservative butylparaben

Enjoy!
PS I also wear a long sleeved shirt.

The emulsifiers in regular brands are not biodegradable. The biodegradable stuff doesn't have them so you will get a bit of residue on your skin. I've never had them burn my eyes. i do get that with regular brands though.

I use the bio stuff mostly because I'm allergic to so many things and have problems with regular ones. As far as ocean/reef health, I've changed my view on that over the years. I hate to say it, but with the crud and crap that's going into the ocean in most populated places, I'm not as believing as I used to be that our choice in sunscreen is either killing or saving anything. Even more so when I'm in places where there's lots of boats (and the slicks on the surface from what's dribbled out of their engines)

Gracias, Reef!

I'll never forget that long day at Xcaret and the pain and swelling in my eyes so we could be "responsible" and wear what the park deemed "reef friendly". I think I missed most of our tour around that really cool cemetary because of it. We really try to do the right thing but then what about aluminum oxides in our deodorant? Anybody out there wear deodorant?

I do miss that one guy at entrance Yal Ku who always made the same statement: "No sun block because it's kill the fish".

I guess I am an optimist. I like to think that some of my actions actually do help our poor polluted planet.

PC5, believe me, I have done more than my share for ocean and reef conservation...

I do though find it a little silly to make such a fuss about bio sunscreen when at the same time, many of the same people are using chemical everything else - shampoos, hair product, soaps, lotions, detergents, etc. If you really want to do something, find out what your accommodations are using to do the many daily loads of linens and towels, what they're washing the floors with (that then is dumped down the drain or just poured out somewhere...) Stop using the chemical laden, toxic insect repellents too. And stop with the plastic bags. Bring your own reusable bags for shopping. I always pack them when I go anywhere.

Everyone needs to do something, but a bit of sunscreen isn't going to save or destroy anything... and yes, I've read the studies, many of them both for and saying otherwise. And many more about bigger issue with our oceans and reefs.

It's got to be more than just a little sunscreen on vacation too. Be concerned and aware at home as well. Too many people are more concerned with their health of the environment at their favorite vacation destinations then they are with their own towns or cities.

No dis intended, Reefhugger. It is hard to keep up the optimism when our eyes tell us our throw away culture is ruining the environment at an unimaginable rate.

It is quite easy to make products for cleaning and personal use. I don't know why more people don't make their own since it is usually cheaper and better for their bodies, as well. Here is a site that has some very good recipes. I make her spray deodorant (make sure the aloe vera is pure), shower soap scum remover, and others.

I continue to hope that more and more people will chose to clean up the environment, at home and on vacation, and not add to the mess already in place.
