I've been stalking this board for a while and so have joined so that I can get some expert opinions. I would really appreciate any insights you can provide. This is our first time to Mexico (have been to border towns and Cancun/Cozumel on cruises but never stayed there for any length of time). Not inexperienced international travellers, just haven't chosen Mexico before. Prior to reading about the sale of property at ABR and impending construction of Secrets, I booked a non-refundable trip for ABR in mid-May for 11 nights. I do have trip insurance. Booked ABR for a reasonable AI on the beach with access to great snorkeling. I'm sure that we'll do day trips to places, but we will likely snorkel most days. The beach is more important than the hotel. Having said all that, I'm now really worried after reading all of this about the construction that is supposed to start. Since I'm not familiar with the hotel or the beach, are there any opinions on how much that construction is likely to affect the beach/snorkelling/hotel in May. I realize it's all speculation, but I'm wondering if I should invoke the trip insurance/take a financial hit and stay elsewhere? After finding Akumal we've been so looking forward to it and now I think we might've made a mistake!!! HELP!?!

Welcome to LG, Lala! I would not worry about it at all... they move on Mexico time where 15 minutes =3 hours! Really!

The beach there is great, and the snorkeling fantastic! It is easiest to enter near the pool & further North, as it is sandier. You will NOT be disappointed!

I wouldn't worry at all. May is wonderful as it is low season and things are quieter.

I would request building 7 which is the farthest away from the construction on the other side of the resort. Also hang out on that end of the beach and just walk to the central part with the super easy water entry when you want to get wet. It is only about a 2 minute walk even from building 7 area.

Going back in a week for another visit and Can't wait! While we will miss the Moonrise we are not worried at all. The wonderful staff, beach and snorkeling will still be there. The area being discussed is large and much of it is well away from the beach.

ABR is a perfect site to use as a base for day trips - lost of things to do and see.

Don't stress, enjoy!

No worries! As they are just starting the project I seriously doubt it will affect anything for at least the next few months. There has to be a lot of site prep (as in surveying and layout) before anything is done. Then the infrastructure has to be installed and I would think most of that would be inland a ways.
That being said, almost anywhere you go between Cancun and PDC (and now Akumal )will have some kind of development already there or on the planning desk, it is inevitable.

Except for the first week in May when all the "rowdy locos" are there. Just ask Bulldog if you don't believe me.
Welcome to the loco world of locogringo Lala. See AASB threads in LG Parties Forum.

I'm here right now (for just a few more hours, booooo!), and the construction hasn't started at all. The north end that was sold has some abandoned buildings and roped off areas, but nothing at all has happened. The towel game is in full effect right now in high season (5:45, for real people??), but hopefully that will diminish some by May. We forgot to make a specialty reservation every single day, but the buffet was just fine. And we saw turtles every single day, which is one of our primary reasons for coming.

We will miss Moonrise also, but still looking forward to our trip May 21-31 ABR. What worries me is following the Adult Spring Breakers, ABR has been known to post "new rules" because of them

Maybe we will meet up. The Mrs. and I will be looking for new headquarters, just look for the big, white haired guy with the confused look!

Request building 7 and it will be quite.

Not us

Besides, we may build ourselves a new Moonrise if one isn't ready  for us
