ORIGINAL: Isla Chica I think you were ripped off royally by that cab! [/color] Guess that is the going rate?? Tony called for them to come he asked the price first and since it was dark and husband's Bday what are you gonna do?! The thing is when we got off the "moonrise" cruise in Akumal few days before from that point to LBV they wanted $10. They said it was a 20 minute walk from Lol Ha area. Not sure really. The cab waited for us while we had dinner also. We got a couple late starts heading to Tulum and it was already dark, we walked to 307 from condo crossed the highway with intentions of a colectivo. Both times a taxi stopped and backed up to us they wanted 250 pesos to Tulum pubelo, we said no and each time we ended up only paying 60 pesos for both of us!! Same as the colectivos. That is one huge price difference from 250 to 60!!

Akumal Bay to La Buena Vida is about 15 minutes at a leisurely pace. I've done it many, many times. Maybe 20 if you're very slow, dodging puddles in the rain, or have already had one too many drinks. I would have been pretty p&%ed off at no stove or hot water for 2 days because "the gas truck can't make it" That isn't a good excuse. If you run a rental condo complex and know you have guests booked, keeping your gas tanks full is something you should be doing. You don't wait until you're all out to guy the company. That's ridiculous. I tend to take just about everything in stride when we rent in Mexico, but 2 days of that would have been something I'd have expected some compensation for. A few hours here and there, even an day with spotty electricity and cool water I've had just about every trip, but 2 days when it's because someone dropped the ball and didn't plan ahead, that wouldn't fly to well. The taxi rates around Akumal are crazy. Based on mileage they're higher then NYC. Staying on Half Moon Bay is convenient. You're a 15-20 min walk from any of the restaurants or bars. If it's a cool night or raining, you still have LBV and La Lunita close enough that it's not a big deal if you do want to go out.

ORIGINAL: crunch Great report and pictures. What a bummer about no gas for 2 days . When you are in a condo that can defeat the purpose. Try HMB next time. You can walk and bike every where and not worry about those crazy taxi prices. How was the place you stayed in Cancun? Any pics? I was hoping to get a day shaved off the price of 12 nights for the inconvenience if it had gone one more day I was putting in the call to Big Tony in Utah!! Rebecca brought us a bottle of wine and told us to order dinner there on our last night so that made it better. I could still eat cereal but the cold showers were hard to take!! Cancun is Cancun. We are Palace members so went to pamper ourselves the last week at the Beach Palace. I will throw them up last. We have been members since 2001 and can not say enough good things about service, amenities, etc. Nice way to end vacation and close to the airport. We have been doing Playa for years, Tulum last Feb for my 50th, and tried Akumal this time. I think we could've rented the bikes and still had a path along the highway from Akumal to Aventuras Akumal. Still very leery about renting a car, have to lay off the beers with that! Playa beaches are getting small again and the other forum mentioned a "stink" going on. Easy there to walk everywhere or do day trips to Akumal or Tulum. Husband very bummed the day we went to Akumal Bay it was very sunny but windy did not see one turtle. Ocean was on the rough side most of the trip so he did very little snorkeling after hauling all his stuff down. AND for the first time ever UsAir charged us for 2 bags LEAVING Cancun so total paid 100 bucks to bring 2 suitcases. We were there for 20 days so not sure if I can figure out how to go just carryon.

Loved your report, summit. I have been wondering about VDR. Bahia is one humongous resort. Taxi fares are ridiculous.

Hey Summit! When were you at VDR? We were just up the beach at the Oasis condos from 1/11 - 1/27. Wandered down to the beach bar on 2 occasions for burgers to bring back for Marguarite. I had some of their ceviche, which was pretty good. It's nice to have at least one walkable alternative for food, if you really shouldn't be driving, and don't feel like cooking. Was Cora there when you were there? It was interesting to chat with her. Enjoyed your pix, too. I've made that beach walk to Chenuyil in past years. Not this year tho. Xcacel cenote I have not been to either. Nor Chamico's. Not sure we'll be in the area next year, as we've fallen for some areas further south. It's been a while since we've been to Cancun to stay, and at times I think I'd be OK with the social part, but I really like the isolation down the road apiece. TMB

It's been a while since we've been to Cancun to stay, and at times I think I'd be OK with the social part, but I really like the isolation down the road apiece. TMB We arrived on the 25th until leaving for Cancun on the 6th. Did not use the beach bar for drink or food.....it is totally separate from VDR but, yes very convenient if we wanted to. One of the eves without cooking gas I looked at their menu but decided on a pizza from VDR's kitchen instead. Was Cora the bartender? One afternoon eating lunch on our balcony my husband says check out the barmaid. She was sitting behind the bar shaving her legs with an electric razor!!! That alone made me skeptical of ordering food!! The cenote was neat and very picturesque but we did not go in. Chemiyul is also beautiful but didnt need to do the walk a second time. I really wanted to see what was around the next bend but didnt go there. Chamico's was ok for the drinks couldn't convince my husband to eat there. The place got really busy at lunchtime so assume it is good as have been all the reviews on here and TA. We will still go to familiar territory until retirement.....me in 2 yrs and Mr. in 11 weeks....so we can relax and not be "tourist". When finally done working we will start to explore again. Everyone always says why do you go to Mexico all the time? Because we know the place!! Sit back and chill. Cancun is entirely different but is beautiful in it's own way. I hesitated big time staying at a private place on Tulum's beach because I am chicken! Jungle to the left and right was afraid I would be AFRAID and not sleep at night. 7 nights at the AI is plenty and much more would be over doing it. Socially.....we are people watchers and husband likes to talk hunting, politics etc so in the end he is ready for more conversations! We have yet been able to convince any of our friends to join us in Mexico either they are too cheap or scared! It would be a blast to introduce some of them to what we have been experiencing for what was our 14th trip. Looks as though you had yourselves a great vacation! We will start branching out in the next couple years, venturing further south and west. I should bookmark or take notes now on the places you and others have visited. I think I will do that.......get a wishlist of spots started. Your trip report is fun reading too!

So while waiting for the food order, I'm chattin' a bit - tryin' to find out if she knows her way around Chetumal, and where the parking is by the water taxi. And is it safe to leave stuff locked up in the trunk. She sez," No - nothings safe. And don't leave your keys with anybody. Last time I did that, my suitcase was gone thru, and the only thing missing was my vibrator". Now what do you say to that? "I'll make sure our vibrator doesn't get left in the trunk, in the suitcase?" Is this TMI, or just a come on by a very pretty lady who knows it? Just then the food came, and I was on the way back to the condo. I did go back tho. What man with a pulse wouldn't? TMB

ORIGINAL: minnjim Great pics! Thank you. That iguana working on the open electrical box.........was he licensed? There were several of these electrical peds along that long walk and every one of them had iguanas in them!! They weren't "hot" boxes per my electrician husband, odd though they gravitate to them ??

LOL LOL Rooftop guard dogs! Just in case Spiderman comes around. That is the most colorful catch of fish I have ever seen! Nice! Wonder why they left the 5th point off this sign in English? It should read: * Do not get in the mangrove to jump into the water I think it still would've been $40 even if he didnt wait for us because they were charging 10 bucks from Lol Ha in to LBV. I didn't realize they left the 5th point off!! Sounds like an important one too. That rooftop dog scared the hell out of us!! Wonder if his bark is worse than his bite?! There were several little turtle tracks down to the water, I like how he avoided the small hunk of wood. One of the ladies from Mississippi that now has lived in Chemuyil for 9 yrs bought several of those fish, the huge crab and a couple of lobsters for 650 pesos, she said it was a fabulous deal for the fresh fish. They were quite colorful now that I look at the pics. I wish I was still there, but by the sounds of some forum posts in Playa, Tulum, etc it is "cold" windy and not so nice this week?? We had great weather only 2 days that it rained out of 20. We were there exactly a yr ago starting in Playa for 3 nights then on to Tulum for 10 finished in Cancun for 4 nights and those last 4 days a yr ago were down right cold and windy and rainy very little sun.
