I heard you can rent a panga, from the dive shop, to drop you off at Chemuyil Beach. Has anyone done this?

I know they have the catamaran tour, but what about just arranging to be dropped off, picked up, bring your own pcinic, and drinks?

How many people can they accomdate in a panga, if we find a small group of people to join us?

I heard the snorkeling is fantastic.

Yes, we did it in 2006. Fished our way down the coast, then had the captain drop us off at the beach. Back then we had the whole beach to ourselves. Snorkeled in the North part of the bay. Brought a cooler with snacks and beer, we had a great time. Later, we walked out to 307 and caught a colectivo back to Akumal.
We arranged it the day before by negotiating with a panga captain on the beach by Lol Ha, I believe we paid $50 for the one way trip. I think you could fit 6 people in the boat with no problem.
There is also a pretty cool cenote a little ways back from the beach.
One other thing, even back then, there was a small guard shack at the entrance to the beach, he asked for a few pesos for using the beach, which we gave him.

Are you sure? This sounds like Xcacel to me. Maybe I'm wrong. We went to Xcacel in April and it sounds just like your description.

The beach and surrounding area are very pretty, but the snorkeling is nothing special.  There are some small outcroppings of rock similar to Yal Ku.  And lots of pelicans!   We had a fun afternoon there with the Cat tour.

Enjoy!

I'd bet you can get a panga to take you anywhere (withnin reason). All it takes is pesos!
I've never had a problem hiring a boat. May depend on the surf whether you can get to the shore in certain areas but we've run up and down the coast many times.

Yeah, I'm really ok with that. I'm not a big snorkeler, I love to take pictures, and hang out on the beach, soak in the water. It actually sounds perfect. Bring my iPod, my towel, my camera, some snackies, maybe a few friends. I'm good!

Yeah, the cat tour might be nice too. I just really need a vacation.

Rucruizin, I can't answer the panga question but I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem.

Anyway, have you been to Chemuyil Beach? I think it's the perfect choice for what you're looking for.

It was one of my favorite places to visit when we stayed at GHP a couple years ago. It was a short walk over the iron shore from the south end of the property and very isolated and beautiful. Be a patient snorkeler and I think you will be pleased. Make sure you take your time and explore as much of the bay as possible.

Hey RU, how ya doing down there in Enchantment Land?

We did almost that last May. Went to the dive shop and got a panga to do a coast tour, ended up hanging at Chemuyil. Did not do a drop off and pick up but as panesh said you can pretty much name your game and they will give you a price

I have done this many times and know that you can set it up with Francisco (I would imagine any of the captains will take you, but not all of them has as good of a relationship with the guards on the beach (yes, there are guards on the beach there now). I can even set it up for you, just e-mail me.--Jimmy

Notch, can you STILL walk it? I have no problem walking from the Aventuras Akumal area, if you can get to it. A boat would be quicker As Trollboy mentioned, I know there are guards.

Hello my fellow Duragotang, it's windy, dry and cold. Ask me again in a ew months, I'll tell you it's windy, dry and hot.

Can you tell me more details about your day trip, please? The DH is not excited about just hanging out at Chemuyil beach, all day. Until he does it...

This sounds great to me, something different. Chemuyil looks pretty protected, is that the case. (From wind, waves, etc)

That beach is awesome. The only problem for me is that there is no shade and I need a little shade after a while. I may need to learn how to make a little lean to with a sheet and some sticks some day.

We've walked there several times when we used to stay at the GBP - it's a nice walk from the GBP Akumal, but it would be quite a trek from Adventuras Akumal... especially the walk back! Doable though. We really aren't that impressed with it, there always seems to be a lot of silt in the water in places and you get that "halocline" effect, or whatever it's called, where the fresh water mixes with salt.

It was okay as a "free" something-to-do from the Bahia, but not sure I would pay someone to take me there, just my opinion. There aren't a lot of waves because it's pretty well protected, but as Crunch said not much shade unless you pull back into the low trees.

Take a lot of water!

Simp, I know exactly what you are talking about. I've seen that at Palladium, and Yal Ku.

I'm talking with another forum member, about maybe doing some other things, with a stop at Chemuyil.

Thanks crunch, I'll bring an old sheet. Or an umbrella, cuz that worked really well for me last time... Oh, ya had to be there

Hey Ru,
I flew into ABQ last Sunday and drove home, the wind blew me all over the road Well it's not like unusual!

Say I have to echo TB's comment on guards. Have mostly been there via Robinson Crusoe latest by dive center boat (arranged through one by HAC). I have been hasseled on several occasions by guards there. I knew enough Spanish to say La Playa esta Publica! They did not care. The point is not so much who is right but why deal with that when you are looking for a relaxing time. Last time there were no guards, that was May 2012.

If your not interested so much in snorkeling maybe Xcacel?

I was told in a previous post that it is accessible by car and a short walk but I forget the details. I'll forward it on if I can find it.

Anyway, I totally agree with sandinmypants' description.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Today it was blowing me all over the snow covered road. That was fun.

Hmmmm, being harrassed by guards does not sound like something I want to deal with. Do they tell you to get off, or do they want money?

Maybe I will just plan to leave my butt on a chair, watching the turtles pop their little heads up.

My camera has been bugging me, to find new subject matter, I thought it would be worth a try.

Gotta second durangotom on Xcacel, Janet. I've never really given the place a thought until I was looking over Tomas and Crunch's November trip report, and the place looks excellent - I'm gonna hit it when I go. Looks like less hassle and pretty good snorkeling.

We did a short visit to Xcacel, back in Sept 09. Maybe we need to go again.

Ru, we spent a day on Xcacel a few years back too, and it was so beautiful...almost had the place to ourselves, brought in our cooler and just chilled. And the walk to the cenote was awesome...so want to do this again!

I walked to Chemuyil Bay from GBP last May no problem. There was a dog that came running at me barking as soon as I started to walk up to the old dilapidated beach bar.Scared the hell out of me!I turned around and calmy walked back towards the water and he left me alone. It's a nice little bay but like others have said I wouldn't pay to check it out.I wanted to see it after reading the book "Lalo of Chemuyil".

hi there....we have walked to this spot several times ( latest was nov/12)

so so snorkeling....you have to go out to coral that is showing just above water...pelicans perch there and you can get some close up pics as they aren't moving ...they are looking down at there next meal....there are plenty of fish near this coral ( they are hiding beneath an overhang in the coral, out of site of the pelicans!!!)
halocine waters are present big time, and you can feel the "cold" water entering through the coral.
the beach is beautiful but shade is limited ...there was enough shade for 6 of us , back about 50 ft. from waters edge.
there may be others on the beach ( locals fishing from shore) or other folk who are walking over from GBP.

an excellent spot for relaxing and going for a swim.

take plenty of water

cheers

stewart
