I was in Akumal in September, and used a particular bank card at several ATMs, including one in the store across from Chomak. I ATTEMPTED to use the one(s) outside by the jewelry shop, but couldn't get it to work (several times).

I received a call from my bank today, saying that the card was compromised as some tried to make a withdrawal on an ATM in ENGLAND today from my acct!

I very rarely use this card at home, as that acct is my "Mexico Money!"

Grrrrrrr!!!

Its not the first time the machine on the sidewalk has been named as a suspect.

Same thing happened to me last Oct.... 7 months after I'd been in Akumal. I do not use ATM's now.

Here's that thread. http://forums.locogringo.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1498198&mpage=1&key=atm

Oh no!
So sorry to hear about that! It sounds like your bank is on top of it. I've used the ATM in El Pueblito (I think that's the name of the store across from Chomak) several times - it often has cash if the machine at Chomak is out. I've never had any luck with those machines on the sidewalk in front of the jewelry store, either. Did you use that card at the airport ATM, too?

I didn't even know there were outside ATM machines by the jewelry store???  I've used both Chomack and the store across each time.  I usually ONLY use my prepaid visa TRAVEL cards in ATM machines and the cards are empty when I come home.  I don't use them again until I reload for next time.

Glad your bank caught it!

Thank goodness banks and credit card companies are on the look out. I got a call from Cap 1 about 10 minutes after making my final payment to LG last sunday advising me of a suspicious charge. I told them I had made the charge and they then released the card.

BEST idea yet, Twirls! I shall do that going forward... IF I can get one with a PIN number. I know one of my banks sells the type that does NOT have a PIN.

The 3 times I used it DID show up on my Sept statement, and I did NOT use it for any purchases.

IC, US bank sells Visa TRAVEL cards.  Comes with a pin and you can change it.  I also keep a Commerce Bank account (cause they charge 0 for keeping it and 0 for using a debit card.  I only put $$ in that account before I travel.  It will NOT let you overdraw so its also safe once I use it up.

Some of my best practises

Do not use stand alone ATMS - ones attached to Banks are the best or the airport - the ones outside the Jewelry store in Akumal not only charge huge fees, they are notto be trusted - there are a few on the Tulum beach as well

Change your PIN # when you return as soon as possible -

Use a travel account

Though lots of these travel cards charge extra

Ditto

IC - KeyBank has these cards also if you have an account - $3.95 for the card - you can't change the PIN though. If the card isn't empty when we come home, it will be by the weekend.

We get ours at Wallyworld. The fees are minimal and you just load it with as much cash as you want.

We order pesos from our bank, Bank of America. Order online and delivered to our door. If you order $1000.00 worth they waive the $7.50 fee. The only fee you wind up paying is the difference in exchange rate. On $1000 we lose $59. To me it's worth not looking for ATMs waisting my vacation time, not worrying about getting our number stolen, ATM fees...etc. ALSO we use the left over pesos to pay for our rent car because they (the rent car people) really get you on the exchange rate and credit card fees. So we make our money back.

This can happen to you anywhere.

Beware of skimmers, especially on outside, out of view ATM machines. I have a friend in Akumal, who just sent an email telling me that his card had been used. I forwarded him the link to this thread. He had no idea, but had the exact same thing happen to him, as Linda did. The charge was from England.

Here is some information, that just might help you prevent this.
