Its not the first time the machine on the sidewalk has been named as a suspect.

Some of my best practises Do not use stand alone ATMS - ones attached to Banks are the best or the airport - the ones outside the Jewelry store in Akumal not only charge huge fees, they are notto be trusted - there are a few on the Tulum beach as well Change your PIN # when you return as soon as possible - Use a travel account Though lots of these travel cards charge extra

ORIGINAL: TwirleyB ONLY use my prepaid visa TRAVEL cards in ATM machines and the cards are empty when I come home. I don't use them again until I reload for next time. Glad your bank caught it! Ditto IC - KeyBank has these cards also if you have an account - $3.95 for the card - you can't change the PIN though. If the card isn't empty when we come home, it will be by the weekend.

We order pesos from our bank, Bank of America. Order online and delivered to our door. If you order $1000.00 worth they waive the $7.50 fee. The only fee you wind up paying is the difference in exchange rate. On $1000 we lose $59. To me it's worth not looking for ATMs waisting my vacation time, not worrying about getting our number stolen, ATM fees...etc. ALSO we use the left over pesos to pay for our rent car because they (the rent car people) really get you on the exchange rate and credit card fees. So we make our money back.

This can happen to you anywhere. Beware of skimmers, especially on outside, out of view ATM machines. I have a friend in Akumal, who just sent an email telling me that his card had been used. I forwarded him the link to this thread. He had no idea, but had the exact same thing happen to him, as Linda did. The charge was from England. Here is some information, that just might help you prevent this. http://consumerist.com/2012/10/09/a-visual-3-step-guide-to-detecting-atm-skimmers/
