ORIGINAL: arkansasgurl There are two excellent deals popping up (well 3 actually) for our upcoming trip. Wondering if anyone has experience with these resorts, especially the beaches and if the buffet or food options has A/C because we prefer to eat not covered in sweat. The other things of great importance to us is good, strong drinks (although we will/can end up buying our own fave tequila, anyway). Rooms with a beautiful view are important to us, as well. Not interested in ABR after all the good and bad I have read. Here are the three deals: Barcelo Maya Caribe: $2888 AI including airfare for both of us, total for 14 nights Noted as 3.5 stars Blue Bay Grand Esmerelda: $2600 for the the same. Noted as 3.5 stars Hotel Marina El Cid: $3100 for the same. Noted as 4.5 stars Thanks in advance! What were you finding for the Oasis Tulum and the Grand Oasis Tulum. They are different, with Grand oasis being the full ticket. You could not go on the Grand Oasis part (and restaurantes) with only the Oasis wristband. Or in my case, no wristband. After getting busted several times over about a week, I just gave up. As long as Doug and patricia had moved down to first floor ocean front, I could access their room from the beach, and check out the back. I'll post some pix in the next segment of my trip report. Doug and patricia thought it was excellente, and especially the food. They keep coming back, but also it's one of maybe a half dozen trips they make each year. TMB

We have done both AI and the condo. I really prefer the freedom, and kicked back feel of the condo. I love the Palladium, but it's a whole different animal, than staying in Akumal, HMB, in a condo. The food is amazing, the people are amazing, it's just so much more laid back. You don't have to dress up, you don't have to wear shoes. You don't have to rush to make the buffet. If you fall off your balcony, you just roll right into the ocean It depends on what you are looking for, in a vacation, but if you haven't tried it, you may want to give the condo route a shot. If you have specific questions, or concerns about it, don't hesitate to ask. We were hesitant, but now, it's all we do. Although, I would love to hang out at an AI for a couple days, especially if I had that much time. Just a change of scenery, food, etc.

I know this is a little off topic but, once you go condo or casita you might never go back to a resort. I guess it depends on what kind of vacation you want. We've done AI's and are done with AI's. Don't need the "shows", don't want buffet food or cattle call for meals, don't need 400 neighbors. We always stay at PC while we are in Akumal. A casita works great for us. If we want a great view we can just go up to the roof. The cost of the casita vs. an AI leaves us over $500 a week for whatever. Pays for the car and food. The staff at PC is outstanding. The condos are great but way too big for just two people. We haven't been at an AI since we sat out a tropical storm at ABR for a couple of days several years ago. There were exactly 12 people staying there so it was like a private resort. No buffet. The price was $68 a person at the time so we went for it. We were at VDM but when the water started coming in around the closed sliding glass doors we took off. The only benefit to staying at an AI in my opinion is the ability to binge drink at a low cost but the margs and cervesas at Cueva take care of that in a hurry.

Panesh- you are precisely ON TOPIC What you are saying is what I have been thinking for a few years. Now, don't get me wrong, we are not anti social. But we are not into big crowds and even though we always have stayed AI, we tend to alienate ourselves in a way from everyone else. For example, we walk as far down the beach as we can past every resort just to have a spot to ourselves. In restaurants, we politely decline seating next to large groups and ask to even sit in the corners, lol. Because we feel this way, it indicates to me that we might truly love the condo experience. Most especially for me, I want to please my DH. I think it might be a really great contrast, in particular for this trip......to stay the first 8 nights in the four star AI and then do a 180 and go to Akumal and stay in a condo. Does anyone know off hand of any condo's whose policy is to receive a deposit up front and payment upon check in? Just curious. Many thanks to my dear friends on LG. quote:
