We need to travel from Akumel to visit the ATM for pesos and also pick up some groceries (mostly beer). I can't tell, from searching previous posts, which grocery store will work the best if we take the colectivo. We don't want to try and run across the highway with bags full of groceries... beer is heavy. And precious.

My suggestion would be something like this. Take the collectivo to San Francisco in Tulum cheap and easy way to get there. Then there is a bank right there in the same complex with an ATM. Then once you have done your shopping negotiate a taxi back to Akumal. That way you would not be lugging heavy groceries and beer flats across the hiway as the taxi stand is out front of SanFrancisco on the southbound side of 307 not across the hiway. Maybe that will work for you, it would definately cut down your costs.
I don't know if you know Alma and Marco at iTour, but if you do, they are right across the street on the south side of San Francisco you could pop over there and say hola to them and have a coffee for a while before doing your shopping. They also have wifi there if you happened to need to check e-mails or or send any messages.

Best of luck whatever you choose to do. Have a great trip!!!

Walk over to the pueblo. I'm pretty sure I read there is an ATM over there. If not isn't there one in front of Chomak and another across the street at the other little grocery? Shop at the grocery at the bottom of the hill. Beer is way cheaper than at Chomak. Hire a taxi to take you back to HMB. Taxi station is across from the grocery store. No way would I be lugging a case or 2 of beer from 307 which you would have to do if you took the collectivo.

We actually go to the Chedurai(?) in Puerto Aventuras to get our stuff.. There is a fairly good selection of stuff...It is easy to get a collectivo there (no running across the 307) walk across the foot bridge once you get there , get groceries, use the ATM just outside the store and pick up either Chinese food or pizza for take out at one of the restaurants there... Then grab a taxi back.. There is usually lots there.. We do not recommend using the ATM by the jewelry store in Akumal.. Our daughter used that one and she had $1300.00 of fraudulent charges on her account 6 months after she returned home...we would like to say it was not them but since she is a student and that was the only one she used it doesn't take long to figure out....

I'm staying in PA this trip and Chedraui is basically across the highway, and I seem to be going there every other day (going again this morning..need COFFEE..and creamer). The bank machine is INSIDE Chedraui now. There is a 6.90peso charge and a 13 peso charge (I think). This rate is STILL better than the Scotiabank charge (in PDC by Soriana) (which also is a stupid machine, 23 pesos charge) and the Bank machine in Sams Club is 27pesos!, AND they won't let you use it unless you're a member!)

There is also a nice new Chedraui in Tulum, and at least 4 bank machines inside (one of them will speak to you in English if you don't understand the spanish print!).

We've taken the colectivo from Akumal to Chedraui in PA . You could also go to the new Chedraui in Tulum or San Farcisco in Tulum by colectivo . ATM's in either town/store . We've taken empty backpacks shopping and returned with beer ,soda , rum ,snacks, bakery goods etc. on the colectivo . Not a bad walk from the highway to the HAC bungalows . Sure feels good to take the back pack off ! It's a good idea to have a cold beer or 2 waiting in your room for when you return ! Happy shoppimg !

Thanks everyone! As it turned out we decided to rent a car for today since it is so windy. So now we'll go to Vallolidad, Ek Balam, as well as ATM and Chedraui!

There is no ATM in the pueblo. You must be thinking of the "last resort" ones near the arch.
