For those who want to know about using high speed internet on their laptop while in the Yucatan.

We visited a local “Telcel” office (by Soriana) where you need to get a ticket and wait inline. You must bring your ID, for example your passport to setup an account. Once this is done, you then need to buy a “USB-Modem” to allow for SIM cards to be installed. This cost us 250 pesos tax included. This is a one time purchase!

Next we just bought a “prepaid” (15 day) SIM card for 220 pesos. This allows for about 5 Gig of data. You actually get a free “sign-up” 5 gig credit to your account also.

We then opened the USB Modem and inserted the little blue SIM card. Then we plugged this into one of the USB ports on the Mac laptop. Within a few seconds a “CD disk” icon appeared on the desktop. Double clicking on this, opened the “Driver Install” package. We just clicked on this and within 15 seconds the “Modem” screen showed up on the screen. It is in Spanish, however I found a preference that converted it to English. It was in the fourth tab “Ayuda”, clicking on it brings up a screen. Setting the language to English is somewhere near the bottom

I selected “Connect” and within 12 seconds we were online - HIGH G3 or G4 SPEEDS. It’s at least as fast as our high speed back home in Canada. The only issue we had was that occasionally during to “heavy cel” phone times, we would get knocked off. All we had to do was wait a minute or so and then reconnect.

To get your full value, make sure you're "on-grid" a fair amount of the time.

Now that's some great info you've shared, Linda.
IF we ever stay at the ABR again, that will be a much better option than (over)paying for their WIFI that you can only use near the lobby.
Thanks!!

Thanks Linda. Hope you don't mind that I made this a FAQ and enlarged your photo. I will be buying one next time down.

No Telcel office in Akumal. I know there is one in Tulum, but I'm not sure they can hook you up with this service. Safest bet for now would probably be to stop at Soriana in PDC.

Great info. Prefer no work during vacation, but if necessary, this will do it. Also, this could help make stays longer than a few weeks become a reality. Thanks!
