Hi
My family and I will be in Peurto Aventuras for 8 days in April. We plan to do a few day trips - Tulum, Akumal, Xel-ha, Xcaret and ? I'm wondering if renting a car either from the airport for the week or from where we are staying for a few ideas might be a good idea. Are there any differenes to watch out for when renting in Mexico? Do tourists get hassled when they get gas, park, need directions?? - Is it very hard to get around if your just sticking to the beaten path? Any trouble with police pulling tourists over just to make up some excuse for "Cash" tickets? Taxis sound like they could get pricey and Collectivo's don't sound all that convient and I'm realy a tour bus sort of person - but I wasn't sure of anything to watch out for when renting a car.
Thanks much for your time.

Many of us rent cars - Easyway at Cancun is one of the preferred - get all the insurance you can

Obey speed limits, ensure you have valid licence plates on the vehicle, read about possible Pemax gas station frauds

Agree with all of VS's points above and add one more - know what the "Topes" sign means.

I like this definition of Topes "verb (used without object) 1. to drink alcoholic liquor habitually and to excess." better than the gaint Speed Bumps one - maybe the bumps are there to slow you down so you don't miss the margarita stand?

Thanks for the info. I'll look into renting. Wasn't sure if many did as I see so much about cost of taxi or collectivo from here to there but little about car rentals. - Any suggestions for places to rent a car for the day in Peurto Adventuras?

When you say get "all the insurance you can" - should I get more than what I would typically get if I am renting in US or Canada? are "acidents" and "damage" common?

I have seen a car rental place outside the gates to Puerto Aventuras, not positive but it may be Executive?

1. Never rent through a third party like ****, etc. Rent directly from a local company, either online, thru your hotel or whatever.
2. Third to what Sundog said, take all the insurance, including CDW, do not rely on your platinum card unless you have a VERY high limit and can afford to replace the cost of the entire car if totaled.
3. Third to obey the speed limits, think most folks who get pulled over are "going with the flow of traffic" - they all speed down there, stay in the right hand lane (unless passing) and let them pass you.
4. No, accidents and damage are not common. My late husband and I rented many cars, the only time we had a minor bit of damage was driving back from Xcalak, we hit a pothole and loosened the bumper, Easyway only charged us $50 or so. The only accident I remember reading about recently was when my friend TwirlyB here on LG and a friend got hit by a truck in Tulum, Easyway just told them "no problems" when they turned the car in. I cannot remember any others and I have been on LG a long time, even have a white cooler - enjoy

Once we started looking at the cost of transfers from the airport with taxi costs vs. car rental for the week, the car rental was much more economical. Not only that, but it will give us the freedom to go where we want, when we want. This will be our first trip to the RM, but we feel pretty confident based on the reviews and experiences of so many LG posters. There are numerous threads on driving in Mexico, I found this one to be very helpful, as there are road sign pics and a link to a site with a lot more road signs: http://forums.locogringo.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1487038

Keep in mind, seems like the only way to get zero deductible now is to add the EPC coverage. With Easy Way, it's only $5 a day, which is totally worth it to us. Have fun, and safe travels!

We always rent and we get to places we want to go to when we want to go. It's that easy. This time we are driving a lot as you can see from my ticker. Easier to get to Guatemala driving than flying and much less expensive. We usually rent for 3-4 weeks at a time. We've crossed the peninsula many times and seen things you won't see without your own transportation. We wouldn't go any other way.
A trip to Tulum whenever we want, whether for dinner or going to Muyil. Want to go to Valladolid for the day, no problem.
If you can drive in a big city in the US or Canada, you can drive in Mexico.

Agree with all above.  I too rent from Easyway.  Have forever.  great service!  Jesus is the GM (my guess).  Fernando and Jose Maria run things too, I believe.  The 0 deductible insurance is changing, as some mention.  When you reserve its best to just tell them how many passengers and luggage and let them match you up with the cheapest car.  I'm not picky.  Also tell them you are LocoGringo as they sometimes discount for that.  Used to be a discount for paying in cash.  Not sure about that but I always get great rates. I have always tipped the guys well tho!   I do pay up front in cash.  Less hassle when I return the car.  I did have the 0 deductible (which still doesn't cover tires and glass.)  We got sideswiped by a barreling ice truck on the Tulum beach road.  It was our fault.  The ice truck didn't stop.  Not sure he even knew.  No Big Deal when I returned the car altho I pointed out the damage.  No problemo!
They will require a credit card deposit altho they don't even put a hold on your card.  They give you back the CC receipt when you return the car.
BTW, the car will not have much gas so either ask them to fill it for you when you get there and you pay and tip.  or stop at the Pemex out front before going down the road.  You need to leave the car with as much gas as when you got it.  If you pay them to fill it.  You can leave it close to E.  Just leave enuf to get you to the airport and them back cause they will take you back to the airport in that car.  No luggage transfer!
If you get on any undivided roads (the highway is divided almost all the way to Tulum) be careful turning left.  The old rule was pull over to the right and make sure no traffic is coming either direction, then make your left turn.  Turning on your left blinker meant it was OK for the traffic behind you to pass!  This scenerio is similar to how we got sideswiped!  We failed to check for traffic on our butts before we turned left!
SLOW down for the Topes!  The signs look like a bra.  sometime with 3 bumps.  Some are some bumps and some are launching ramps!  I have hit my head on the ceiling of the car when failing to see the tope sign!
Have fun!

Also NEVER leave anything in sight in the car!  Cameras, shoes, anything.  Do not put anything in the trunk after you park and then walk away.  Never leave windows cracked or down.  Always lock the car.  Personal experience once again!

Thanks for the tips, Twirley! I just reserved with Easy Way (Jesus was very kind and helpful in emails). We had debated hitting a cenote near PM on our way to the resort, but after your advice on not leaving things in the car (and that has been our biggest concern with this idea), we will cross that possibility off our list!

This is probably a stupid question, but about turning left on 307- from what I've seen on Google street view (and read about), there are turn lanes in the resort areas. I am assuming that in those cases, it's ok to make your left turn from that far left lane?

RETORNO that is what the sign will say. It is like a left turn lane for making u-turns to get to the other side of the highway where it is divided by a median lane. Carril Izquierdo means left lane.

Awesome, thanks Panesh! That's exactly what I was thinking. Thanks for the pic!
