My wife & I are planning to stay 4 or 5 nights in Xcalak. We expect to snorkel, dive, and even fish, if they'll let me fish with a spin-cast outfit. (Never learned to do that fly-fishing, and don't want to be learning down there.) Along with eating, drinking, sunning, and sleeping, I expect we'll be busy. So, is the day-trip to Belize worthwhile or is it just a long day of boat riding and then bar-hopping in San Pedro? (Nothing against bar-hopping, but time is precious when you're on vacation! If anybody has been to Xcalak, please tell me the best stuff to be sure to do! Thanks, Bob

Most definitely. I assume you are talking about the excursion out of XTC. It's $250 for the boat. If 2 other couplkes go, the price is really reasonable. But this is a day trip. Last year we took the excursion (its in a panga), and it started to rain once we got there. We had planned to snorkel Hol Chan and Shark & ray alley. With the rain, Marguarite aND i HUNG OUT WITH jEFF AND mARLA AT eSTELL'S bY THE sEA FOR BREAKFAST, MEMOSAS, RUM PUNCH, wET wILLIES FOR MARGARITAS AND MORE RUM PUNCHES, Elvi's for some seafood, and another bar just before we got back on the boat. 1 1/2 hr ride - bring rain gear just in case. This year we stayed 3 nights in San Pedro at Banana Beach resort. We took the waTER TAXI FROM cHETUMAL. Lots more rigamaroll. Hol Chan reserve is the best snorkeling I've ever done. TMB Where in Xcalak are you staying? We were there this year for 5 nights. We really enjoyed it there. Xcalak offers some great snorkeling., again tours thru XTC. There is also some great snorkeling off shore, but only in selected places. I'd skip the manatee thing in Bacalar Chico, and just do a 3 reef stop snorkel. Diving is also great. La posa has 100+ lb tarpon. There's likely great snorkeling by the reef break, if your resort has kayaks. Oh, and fishing.

The two restaurant meals we had were at Costa nde cocos. They were both excellent. Other restaurants seemed hit and miss - some meals excellent, and some so so, at Leaky Palapa and Tierra Maya. Depends on what you order. I guess I'm partial to my own cooking, when staying at a place equipped to do so. Toby's was bar food for the super bowl. TMB

tmb - surprised your meal at Leaky Palapa was just so-so, last time I was in Xcalak, I had the best shrimp tempura ever there, it was melt in your mouth. Yes, try and find another couple or two to split the costs, your hotel will help if they can. We were supposed to go with two other couples one year and when Victor (who was working for XTC then) came by the afternoon before to collect our passports for the Belize visa, turned out 3 of the 4 peeps were doing the drivers license/birth certificate thing (this was awhile back before US made passports mandatory so sadly the trip had to be scrubbed). Still hope to get there one day.
