This past trip I did a little survey on ATM fees at various places between Cancun and Tulum since the fees vary quite a bit. Here's what I found:
Cancun airport - HSBC machine - fee about 35 pesos
Chedraui at Puerto Adventuras - fee about 61 pesos in the store, slightly higher in the hall
Akumal Chomak and other market - fee 99 pesos!!
Chemuyil pueblo market - fee about 21 pesos
Tulum San Francisco - fee about 25 pesos BUT at the adjoining bank fee is about 60 pesos
Tulum downtown HSBC - fee about 21 pesos

go figure!

Good to know.

PS..Ally, a US Internet bank, refunds all ATM fees. It's nice to see the refunds in my account when I return from a trip.

Does Ally charge any foreign currency conversion fees? Are their any fees at all for using it for an ATM card?

Reason I'm asking is last year our ATM card got skimmed. We ended up getting our money back but we were out $1600 for over a week. We were okay but it did scare me enough that I am going to open a separate account for this trip and close it when we get home. I was thinking of just opening another account at our local bank but now I am considering this Ally bank.

Thanks for the info!

hmm - not sure when Doug visited Akumal - guess they raised the fees

They were around 60-65 pesos last year

In the airport, Coz (atm), Tulum (bank atm), PA Scotia bank ATM, ABR ATM (before it was closed - sigh), fees were under 30 pesos

Some ATMs ask for a 5 peso 'charity donation'

My Transaction fee was refunded, but not the other fees.

These fees were charged by the bank that owned the ATM, not Ally.

What a rip.

Transaction Fee: $1.73
Cross Border Fee: $1.91
Currency Conversion Fee: $0.48

You can have your ATM card set up so it can only withdraw from your checking.
You can have your checking set up so there is no automatic overdraft transfer from another account.

We have a separate checking account and debit card with Capitol One that we use at ATMs while traveling. The account is interest-bearing and they don't charge exchange fees. Other fees aren't refunded, though. We will bring another credit card in case of emergencies, etc. But it offers some peace of mind knowing that account isn't tied to any others.

Do you know where your card was skimmed?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember an ATM at Hacienda Dona Isabel by the Bahia Principe just South of Akumal. Haven't been there recently so I may be dated.

It is hard to say where it was skimmed becuase we used several different ATMs. All three of the ones in Akumal, the one in the Soriana in PDC, and one in the airport in Cancun. I think we used another off the side of the road on the way to PDC but I don't know the name on that one. So it could have been anywhere really. The charges didn't show up on our bank account until a few months later so we would have been fine if we canceled the account after our trip.

Here is what I have been taught, and what I do.

Grab the card reader and shake and twist it. If there is a skimmer on the card reader, it just might come loose.

Cover your hand when entering your PIN. Your PIN is typically captured by a hidden camera.
