Hi everyone. We have been visiting Akumal regularly for the last decade and have had great memories. Our next trip is around the corner and while we plan on being in Akumal, I want to hedge my bets and get to know a couple of new areas if our worst fears are realized and Akumal loses some of its local flavor. Any suggestions for new areas to explore? Like most people what we value is a good beach, great snorkeling, great food, and manageable crowds. Thanks for your input! p.s. - I know this question is not fully consistent with my comment above but If you have a real estate agent you have personally found to be vey knowledgable with strong English skills, I would appreciate a pm with his/her details in case we lose our minds and want to make a long term commitment.

Zihuatanejo on the Pacific side is beautiful, the only thing it's missing out of your list is great snorkeling. It's adequate, but in general the Pacific side just isn't as colorful. On the upside, though, great people, cheap yummy food (although we don't do gourmet, to be fair. We want safe, good, and reasonably priced), and very un-touristy. Ixtapa is only about 10 miles away and feels like a different country, we far prefer Zih. We're actually doing Akumal for the first time this year (on Saturday, woohoo!!) because the airfare to Zihua was killing us. We're very excited, but a little nostalgic to be missing our home away from home. Good luck in your search!

Holbox is next on the list for development. My good friend has family there and land is being sold. We've stayed on the island with them. The collective isn't as strong as it used to be since money talks and the older generation is fading away. We just lost one of our dear friends there and their land might be on the block soon. We'll find out on our next trip to Holbox. It's still a great place to visit for now. The RM is full of great places to visit and almost too much to do. We spent a month last year traveling to Valladolid, Calakmul, Oxkutzcab and many other places. Loltun caves were incredible on the Ruta Puc. This year we are heading south to Guatemala for a week of adventure before spending a couple of weeks in Akumal. I love the beach but where I grew up we went to the beach before school in the morning to get a little surfing in, so I'm not inclined to go down there and do nothing but sunbathe. I get my beach fix and then head out to explore the Yucatan, It's an amazing place. It's easy to find new adventures in the Roo.

Just found it. Bacalar is down near Belize. It looks wonderful. The logistics of gettting there would be a challenge. what is the best way to get there? Fly into Cancun and drive all the way:( or is there a better way?

No snorkeling as it is fresh water, but see the pirate museum, do a tour of the lagoon, cenotes, and pirate canals. Got lots of pix to post, but it'll be a bit as there's lots to sort thru. If you have a car rental, it's a breeze. It's about 100 km from Tulum to Filipe Carrillo Puerto, about another 60 km Limones, and I dunno - about another 45 minutes south on 307. Great roads. TMB

Love love love lake Bacalar. We stay at a very private house called Manatee in the Moon. It at the northern portion of the lake so a closer drive. its located just outside of Pedro Santo. Also love the town of Bacalar. We always have to eat at Cenote Azul everytime we are there.

We have ventured out of Akumal for the past few years, and two of our favorites are Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres. We like staying at Casita Blanca Condos in PM. The place is a small family run business and the manager and his wife go out of the way to make your stay pleasant. It is old, but well maintained and is located at the north end of PM which happens to have the best swimming beach in all of PM. The water is calm and suitable for children. There is a cute bar just down the beach were ex-pats hang out. The pool is nice, the whole place is quiet, and you can walk to town easily to many very good, cheap restaurants. This is a National Park area, so if you want to snorkel out at the reef, you have to pay $10 I think for a wrist band. This is to keep tourists from harming the coral and fish...Akumal should do that! The snorkeling is better here because it is in much better shape. I love it in that area. Our other fun place is the Ixchel Condos on Playa Norte on Isla Mjueres. Talk about a calm, great swimming beach. This is it. The condos are great, and the best part is that it is 5 minutes from the ferry, 3 minutes to the market with it's great food stalls and produce, and minutes to all the great restaurants. We rent a golf cart for the week and explore the whole island. It is a nice break from having to rent a car at the airport and drive through Playa...headache....and spend alot of time coming and going back to the airport. Taking the ferry is a breeze, and you can get a pickup at the airport to the ferry and back...love it. Snorkeling can be done on the south end of the Island at Garrafon, but next door at Garrafon de Castillo, it is only 50 pesos to hang out there, and you can snorkel up into the park for way less money. It is rocky there with a bit of a current, but well worth saving some big bucks. You can also snorkel west of the condos, which is not too bad...

Thanks for the great report. My hopes have been restored that all is not lost down there.
