My girls and I are coming down in a month to RM and I keep reading different things about whether to get 4WD for a rental car. One hotel owner said don't get it because they disable it and someone else said you definitely need it for some of the more remote locations. Any experiences or recommendations? Thank you!!!!!!!! You can travel most anywhere with no problems in a two wheeI drive vehicle. The highways are great and the roads are pretty decent unless you are going way into the interior or off roading for sport. I haven't come across a road that I couldn't navigate in a regular rental car and we have gone to some extreme places. The road to Punta Allen is dirt and like the surface of the moon but you can get by with a regular two wheel drive car ( if I had a choice I'd get a rally car for the Punta Allen trip hehe). We've been on worse roads than that one.We usualy travel a couple of thousand miles in a month down there and I wouldn't think of renting a 4 wheel drive vehicle. This next trip we are driving to Guatemala from Cancun in a regular compact car, no worries. Enjoy the trip.

Hi There.....and welcome to the group I agree with just about everything said, so far. A Jeep is a luxury, unless you plan on traveling some back roads, and yes, the four wheel drive is usually disconnected. What the Jeep does offer, and cannot be disabled, is excellent ground clearance. Just the thing for those deeply rutted and bomb crater sized potholes you come upon on some side roads. If it was me, I'd skip the expense of the rental Jeep and pick up a compact ride for my day to day travels. You can always hook up with one of those Jeep Safari outfits, if the off roads call!. either way.....have fun and enjoy your trip! ...dave
