Really! I have a new parafoil kite that I can't decide to take or not. Its super light and packable but am unsure if it will be worth it or if it will just end up on the list of stuff we don't bother with the next trip.

If you like flying kites and have room for it - take it.
For sure you won't use it if you don't take it.
We've seen people flying kites on Akumal Beach and of course Tulum is a kite glory - mostly human kite gliders.

I have always wanted to take my stunt kites to Mexico, but they're a bit too large to pack. Also, I worry that they have too much sail for the strong prevailing wind. (On the beach in Chincoteague, Va., one of our kites picked up my son when he weighed about 75 pounds!) I do have in mind getting a very small mylar stunt kite, which would be practical to pack and be the right size for the wind on Tulum playa.

EDIT: Of course, a foil kite would solve both problems.

I brought a cheapie for fun at Xamach Dos. You'll be regretting not bringing it Dirk.

Hey kite fans, what would be a good kite for Mexico and how much am I looking at?

I have brought kites with me every time I have gone on holiday. I leave some of them with staff that have children and some I take back home. I found the best time to fly is usually in the early morning before the wind picks up.
Take one or two and have fun.

Expect to spend about $50 for a good beginner kite. (You can go up to about $200 for a high-end, twitchy kite. I have never felt compelled to do so.) Prism makes very good, tough, high-performance kites. I've got a couple. I have my eye on the Prism Jazz, which packs down to 25 inches.

Years ago I built a number of kites for my daughter. Ripstop nylon and graphite arrows. I think she still has a couple but its too late now to get before our trip. Maybe next year. The parafiol will fly this week!
