I'm taking my family of 4 (wife and two teen daughters) to Akumal over Spring Break in March and staying on Half Moon Bay. We been to the area several times and have snorkeled in the bay and Yah-Kul on a couple of occasions. Anyways, I was surfing around to find some additional things to do in the area and ran across a tripadvisor section on Aktun Chen. Looks like a lot of fun between the cave hike, zip line, and cenote snorkeling. Anybody been and vouch for the place? Their home web site (aktunchen.com) looks to be run by Indiana Joe's, but I can't tell if that is just a tourist company trying to get your business or they in fact run the place. We will have a car, so we could easily drive there as it appears to be just 2.5 km so of Akumal. Can we just show up when we want? Do we need reservations in advance? Any thoughts or advice is much appreciated?

jackb, we've been twice (about a decade apart - 2nd time was with our daughter). We enjoyed it both times. Both times we just showed up on a cloudy day.

Thanks for the feedback. Any information on Indiana Joe's. Do they run the place? Can we just show up or do we need reservations?

We just went to Aktun Chen last Friday. Arrived without a reservation...no problem and no crowds to fight. Did the ziplines with another group of four and had a blast (definitely do as many of the 10 runs as you can upside down!).. Staff was very knowledgeable and very safety focused (three guides for our group of six, always keeping you clipped in with a safety harness). Afterwards, we went through the caves with another pair and a group of four...good lighting and non strenuous...the caves are very nice and they've taken care to minimize damage to the formations. Our cave guide, Vincent, was very knowledgeable (a former Chemist who worked throughout the U.S., but decided to simplify life by moving to Playa about 15 years ago). A bit pricey, but we didn't mind spending the cash for the experience (they willl try to sell you photos, but it was pretty low pressure). Have fun!

Anybody been and vouch for the place? I can vouch. Really enjoyed the cave tours. Very informative and beautiful. No reservation required. I wouldn't hesitate to go back.
