I loved drift snorkeling Palancar. Felt like being in some type of aquarium... so much coral and so many fish. Hope you can post more pics.

Ok, Tomas and I have got to go back and do that again this trip. I will start working on him now.

Was it $35.00 per person? For the snorkeling not diving of course.

Yes, $35 is correct. We went with Louis and saw a nurse shark, eagle ray, sting rays, huge parrot fish, angel fish and grouper.

Hi.

Do you mind answering a couple of questions:

1) Can you share the contact info for Louise or the touring company?

2) This looks like a great snorkeling adventure for us while our friends Scuba. Is it an easy snorkeling adventure? My wife would not do well with strong currents.

Thank you for sharing!

My fingers are crossed! We did this trip several years ago and it really is time to do it again.

I don't know how many of you have ever snorkeled with CWR. But those that have know how EXCITED she gets when she spots something new or awesome. So you can only imagine being in the water with her at Palancar when she mistook this guy for her husband. LOL Definitely do it, Crunch. Great fun drift snorkeling.

HA!!! Usually I get that excited when it IS Mark, not when it's not!!! lol This time was definitely an exception! I really enjoyed Palancar - that's where we followed the nurse shark for a bit and saw the green moray eel hunting as well.

Cozumel's water clarity is as amazing as the bright stars in the Mexican sky.

You need to go spend an afternoon at Playa Palancar. Take their snorkel trip then hang out and have some food and drinks. It's a very casual place and the food and drinks are good and fairly reasonable relative to other beach clubs.

A lot of the dive shops come here for surface intervals so a lot of their business is divers that come and go within 60-90 minutes. It never really gets too crowded because of that... and it's not on the cruise ship list so you won't get invaded by bus or van loads.

When you say "drift snorkelling" what do you mean?

We will be at Grand Sirenas for two weeks first of March and are planning a full day in Cozumel. We had thought to go to the Money Bar but Playa palencar with snorkelling sounds just fine too... so many plans to make

Susan :)

Money Bar is good for snorkeling from the beach. At Palancar you need to take the boat trip out to the reef.

Drift snorkeling refers to simply floating passively on the sea surface while using snorkeling gear to observe below. It differs from "active" snorkeling in that the snorkelers do not use fins to propel themselves along, unless they see something they want a closer look at.

You can put in at the Money Bar and then drift with the current down to Fiesta Americana and get out there.

RT-
The ocean at Coz has a surface current. The boat drops you up current and picks you up after about 50 mins. You drift about 2 miles down along the reef. The boat we used dropped us twice... on both Columbia and Palancar reefs. You are a few miles out from shore, and the water can be up to 30-40 feet deep at most. Shallower at times as well. The day we went to Money Bar the water was extremely choppy and only a few of the braver souls went in so you do have to time it.

Thanks, Jazz.

It's definitely good snorkeling. A little deeper than I prefer, but nice.

Bobbing around on those swells out there make me sick as a dog. Both times I had to cut my snorkel short and get back on the boat. If I do it again, I will take something before I go out.

Palancar really was a fun snorkel trip.

However, I did get sampled by an 18-inch long spanish grunt. No, I am not kidding. He took a swipe at the fleshy part of my hand and, when I looked at him he had this expression that said "So what are YOU going to do about it?" It did not draw any blood but the thing that bothered me was the fact that I was just a skimmer on the surface. Why not go after those SCUBA folks instead?

Of course the dive master did not believe me. "No, he did not bite you. He's nice fish". Nice fish my a$$. I showed him the bite and I took a macro photo of it just for fun. It's in our 2010 trip report, under May 27.

Hey, fish! Don't bite the tourists.

Eactly! If we aren't supposed to touch them, they shouldn't touch or bite us.

Tomas- I had a chub take a bite out of my knuckle!! it hurt & it scraped my skin.... after that, any fish that got closer than 1 ft got swatted at with my camera!

Sounds good. I love to snorkel but am very aware and cautious of currents and such; especially out in the deeper ocean and far from shore. I have visions of the boat leaving without us We have never snorkelled in Cozumel before so.... but we are going to have a day trip there and will keep both places in mine (an open mind that is :) )

Have I said lately that I love this forum !

Money bar for more shallow snorkeling if you do not like the deep water. It is very accessible. Our guide at Palancar kept watch on everyone, small boat, not alot of people. Also they had us wear snorkel vests. I felt very safe, but it is deeper water.

THanks for the info. I don't mind deap water it is more that it is unknown deep water. We snorkel at a place in Cuba where it gets quite deep about 100 feet from shore and have no problem with it but we are familiar with the area and there are absolutely no currents. I tend to like to take baby steps...

Can't wait!

Susan

The good thing about the deep water out there is that the clarity is fabulous so it is not scary really.

EXACTLY!! No matter how deep the water is, you always stay the same place - on the surface!! I was amazed at how much we saw!! PLUS, I'd rather be a few feet ABOVE a shark than on the bottom WITH it!!
