I had originally planned a trip to Tulum for our trip. After more LG research, we're leaning toward skipping Tulum and heading to Muyil instead. I know Tulum is a gorgeous setting and much larger site, but we both love the idea of getting up close and personal with the ruins and being able to climb them (not to mention much smaller crowds). Do you think we'll regret missing out on the much more popular Tulum? We do still plan to hit Tulum beach and town after Muyil. Also, do the Xel-Ha ruins have their own entrance fee, or do you have to pay park admission to access them? We wouldn't mind checking them out for a quick stop on one of our outings, but only if they had their own separate fee as we have no intention of going to Xel-ha.

Hi Tamie, You can easily do all 3 in one day. The Xel Ha ruins are on the other side of the road from Xel Ha. We went there years ago and the entry fee is nominal and has nothing to do with Xel Ha park. Don't think it should take more than an hour. We had a guide that was very knowledgable. I would go to Tulum early before the crowds and heat. Muyil is about 10 min. from there. The ruins are in a very small area so shouldn't take long unless you want to spend an extra 3 hours or so hiking to the lagoon and taking a boat ride which was awesome. Don't know what time Xel Ha ruins close, but I think if you start early should be doable. Take bug spray.

Thanks, Noodle! Glad to know the Xel-Ha ruins are separate from the park! Yep, I'm stocking up on bug spray and wipes- both with and without deet.

We were at Muyil in January. You are no longer able to climb the ruins, at least they are discouraging it by roping the steps off.

You have lots of options since it seems that you will be driving . The little ruin at Xel Ha is pretty close to Akumal and you can actually see the main structure from the highway , so it is simple for colectivo riders as well and can be rolled in with a lot of other day trips like Dos Ojos or with Chanicos at Soliman to cool off afterwards . A world apart from the Disney Xel Ha . For us , both XelHa and Muyil are nice jungle walks with some limited ruins to learn from and to walk where they walked and feel it without completly understanding everything . The cenote walk is nice at Xel Ha and the walk to the lagoon at Muyil is really nice . We had no issues with insects at either place in the winter months but being prepared is always wise . Every darn thing including most snorkel adventures are best done first thing in the morning and so are all the ruins , you have to choose priorities . The heat at Tulum ruins is the worst with no shade but it can be reduced by the ocean breezes . You could give Muyil priority , save Xel Ha to bundle with someplace another day , and after Muyil return to Tulum town or beach for lunch , probably the beach to cool off , make it the main south Tulum beach area , maybe Ziggy's at Cabanas Tulum with ample parking . Be strong enough to leave there and return on the beach road access to the Tulum ruins in the heat of the late afternoon and take in that relatively small ruin , with the lessening crowds , in a general way , saving more substantial learning for another trip . Entry costs to all ruins are so small as to be insignificant so a shortened trip is a viable choice . Then go to a beach club or just picnic on the beach, near a beach club like Zazil Kin , which is just outside the ruins beach road entrance . You could switch the order of your beaches or ruins as you please but I suggest the north beach for last because the direct sunlight lasts longer at the wider angle location of the north beach area , just as it does at the north end of Halfmoon Bay compared to Akumal . There is a middle beach club option at Zamas that is nice in the waning sunlight because seabirds seem to use this time to divebomb for fish just to the south and are fun to watch . There is a small Playa Publica with a wide enough parking area to sit for free as well at this spot just south of Punta Piedra and Zamas . See the map . The beach road terminates to the north at the ruins . The main turn to north and south beach areas is on a sweeping curve and not at 90 degrees as shown and can be missed . If you don't like any of those options we have stopped at the very first glimpse of open ocean after taking that north turn to the ruins , seen below . The last picture is of a very regularly shaped rock , near there , with some very regularly shaped inclusions and very likely is a ruin or ruin base in my opinion . We were alone there for quite a while . Perfecto . The second to last photo is my new personal "LIKE" button http://www.tulummaps.com/

Awesome information, Juan! Thanks for all the great suggestions, and the ins and outs of the beach areas and clubs! We will have a car, so that should make it easier for us to bounce around as we please. Love your pictures!

Tamie: Xel-Ha and Muyil are the same price $36Mex (or so it was YEARS ago). Theya re simple ruins, uncrowded and are very much worth the trip. I prefer Xel-Ha because of the murals that you can still see, and there is a small temple at the testern end that has a jaguar motif. Tulum is one of the "marquis" ruins and so it charges more ($85Mex?), same as Chichen Itza and Uxmal. So many people visit it now you are required to stay on the pathways and have to shuffle along with the masses. Go early. There was a staircase down to the beach so you could swim and cool off (as Jaun stated there is no shade). Best ruins for climing is Coba. Plus there is a whole lot more there too. Billiam
