Of course the government website is ridiculously confusing, so I'm asking the experts. Since we leave ONE WEEK FROM TOMORROW (!!!!!) and we have a nonstop flight back, it makes sense for us to bring back as much cheap booze as we can. So, twofold question:

First, what's our limit per adult that can be brought in duty free? And if we go over that limit, what would duty be on hard liquor? Would we just be better off buying at home and saving ourselves the trouble?

And second, are deals incoming at the airport usually two-fers? if so, can we buy the two-fer, drink some during the week and probably donate the rest to the ABR bar, and carry one back thru security at the airport?

As I reread this, it's actually a severalfold question but this is the first time we've been nonstop to our final destination since all the new rules went in place lo these many years ago, and I want to make sure I both understand the rules and the best way to work with (and maybe a little bit around) those rules.

Never seen any 2fers at the airport myself. You may bring back 2 liters of alcohol - bottles are 1000 ml each. I have not seen 750's personally. I think that tends to be American sizing.

That being said, I have packed 2 liters in my suitcase and picked up another 2 at the airport. I came thru customs last in Charlotte, NC (have many times thru DTW) and no one ask for any money. If asked what I was bringing back, I said souvenirs & liquor. No one ever asked how much liquor, but they may not have wanted to bother with the minimal amount it might be. They can certainly see the 2 in the bag via x-ray and the 2 in my hand in a Duty-free bag.

We've typically purchased 750ml bottles of tequila. Seen both sizes. and even the 3L bottle of Don Ramon.

From the US Customs site...
quote:

There is no federal limit on the amount of alcohol a traveler may import into the U.S. for personal use, however, large quantities might raise the suspicion that the importation is for commercial purposes, and a CBP officer could require the importer to obtain an TTB import license (which is required for all commercial importations) before releasing it. A general rule of thumb is that 1 case of alcohol is a personal use quantity - although travelers are still subject to state restrictions which may allow less.

We typically bring in 2 per person. I've seen better pricing here, but do like to bring back brands not available in the states.

I usually bring back Tequila, Mescal, Kahlua and/or Rum, and get them at all at 1/2 the price I pay here.

We bring back 2 bottles of Tequila each from Duty free (750 ml bottles) and pack a couple bottles of Controy in our luggage. Never had a problem

Depends on what state you are traveling to. If you are traveling to Texas it is one liter per person. We always buy two at the airport but have several in our suitcases. Never had a problem.

You didn't say where you are from! I'm from Texas! September 1,2011 Texas adopted new rules on liquor brought back here! I have a copy of TABC Code 107.07 in front of me! You can now
bring back 1gallon of liquor,3 gallons of wine! Anything over 1 bottle there is a federal tax of 2-3
USD per bottle on top of the Texas tax.
Fifth 3.50
Quart 3.75
Half gl 4.25
Gallon 5.50
Wine
Fifth 3.25
Gallon 3.75
The tax on airline size bottles is 3.25. What a joke!
This is from personal experience! We just split the bottles among us to make the tax lower!

I hope this helps you and and other travelers!

We live in Florida, I'll try some investigating on the state website. Had no clue there were state regs even involved.

They will tell you at the duty free how many you can bring back. You are correct, it is MUCH easier flying direct and worthwhile because so much of it is substantially less expensive than here in the US.

Additionally, there are some delicious choices you cannot get here. Case in point: Clase Azul. Love the stuff, but can't get it in Texas....I checked. The only way to get Clase Azul is to order it from CA and pray it doesn't break.

As for the amount you can bring back, I thought they told us four bottles for each of us. We have connected at IAH and repacked it into our luggage, with the only real issue is the disorganization of IAH process and the tight cut times. 4 times now, nothing has broken yet and we take Milagro with us in our checked luggage.

Good luck!

Y'all are going to be sick of me before I even get there. if we carry on booze in Cancun, can we pass it off as our "personal item" or will it count as our carry on? Delta, if it matters.

I was threatened with arrest for bringing my own booze on a flight from PR years ago. They confiscated it on the plane.
That was quite a flight.
It's kind of like bringing your own booze to a bar.
I'd check with the airline way ahead of time.

You have to buy at the duty free (in the airport) if you want to carry it on. I'm not sure about it counting as a carry on with Delta. I know with American it didn't count as a carry on.

The only booze you can carry-on NOT from the duty-free are the mini-bottles, and those must fit in your 1-Qt Ziploc bag with other carry-on liquids.
