Closed season on Grouper is Feb 15- March 14. Closed season on Lobster (including mini lobster) is March 1 - June 30. These dates hold for all of Q.Roo, so mainland, Cozumel and Isla. If these items are on the menu, please order something else... if they were locally caught, they shouldn't be, and if they've been shipped in, well, you can get that at home.

What if they have been caught outside those seasons and frozen? Seems like Cueva catches and freezes for serving later if I recall right?

I've had the mini lobsters at Cueva in May when I go, but they are probably frozen - don't care they still taste good. I miss lobster in May. Maybe I kind find somewhere that has it frozen.

Caught in season and frozen is fine. For myself though, my own preference, I'll enjoy something fresh caught that day. Mostly because if I'm in the Caribbean I don't want to eat something that was frozen, I can go to any local grocery store fish counter at home and get that. I've never liked spiny lobster or the mini's. My fav is Atlantic lobster, the further north the better. Everyone has to make their own choices, I just want to let people know so they can at least question where they eat if grouper and lobster are served out of season.

I appreciate you letting us know when closed season is. My favorite is catching mahi mahi and having pescadors cook it right up.

Are any of the shrimp fresh, or are they frozen? Thought I read that most of the shrimp comes from the Progresso area and around there on the Gulf Coast? And yes, grouper is good, but I do love my shellfish as well. Mahi mahi is also really good, hopefully I can have some in May, should be the start of the season.

As far as I know the shrimp comes the Gulf. How it's shipped I don't know.

Good to know. We'll be sure to order grouper the first three days we're there.

We had to change our trip dates a few months ago so we miss out on lobster but are heading into dorado season. Looking forward to hooking a few of those bad boys. The best eatin fish anywhere.

Thanks for the info! Looks like I'll miss out on lobster, but that's not my fave anyhow, so no great loss. Thrilled to see we will be able to get Grouper, after all the great things you all say about it.

Seafood freshness depends on where you are eating it. If you are at an All-Inclusive that needs 600 pounds of shrimp each day for the 4,000 guests, it is probably coming in frozen from Equador or Vietnam. The smaller restaurants will be more likely to have local seafood. Billiam

I love grouper and conch, but both are overfished and populations keep declining. I try and make other choices when they're on the menu. I've had plenty of delicious snapper in Mexico.

Crunch: Conch was so overharvested that it never recovered. What conch you may find is protected. Conch that is found in restaurants is imported (usually frozen) from the Bahamas. Failing that there is always Tuna-Noodle-Helper in a skillet to satify your "seafood fix". Saludos! Billiam
