I was just wondering if there are any vegans on this board other than me?

Also, does anyone know of restaruants that offer vegan dishes? Lol ha seems to have a vegan friendly menu and I found a tour group that will cater to a vegan. Any thought/tips are greatly appreciated as this is my first international trip as a vegan and I am a bit nervous.

I was a vegan once. It almost killed me. However... I can tell you that being gluten free, and allergic to eggs, I pay very close attention to menu options.

Eating Vegan in Mexico, should be pretty easy. There are lots of fresh fruit, and veggie options. Worst case scenario, you eat a ton of guacamole, pico de gallo, hummis, corn and flour tortillas, black beans, rice, and potatoes. Oh, watch the refried beans, they might be cooked with lard.

Nope, I do not thing you will have a problem anywhere... the above options are always available.

Try the veggie fajitas at La Cueva

Que Onda, in North Akumal, offers great homemad pasta. Rats... made with egg? They have great salads.

La Loncheria would probably work. Chilaquiles, and other options

Turtle Bay has vegetarian options, just skip the cheese and egg

What I have found, is... you can eat out almost anywhere. Mexico is the easiest place to find food that is safe for, for me at least.

I would say make a card that has your dietary needs written in Spanish. Alot of food may look like it doesn't have animal products in it, but cooking with animal fat is very prevalent, Even chips.

Kim, RN: I am a pescatarian, so I have no problem in general, however I don't eat tortillas, refried beans, soup, etc that may be made with lard or chicken broth, etc.. I think the idea of taking file cards with notes on it is a good idea.

There's a vegan restaurant in Tulum that gets good reviews. I haven't been there, but I've seen them on facebook via a couple friend's posts. It's called Restaurare. I think there's a few vegetarian restaurants there too. Try doing a Google search for "vegan Tulum" I'm sure there's some in Playa too. If not actual vegan or vegetarian, there will be several that are vegetarian and vegan friendly with options on the menu and willing to adjust for you.

For tortillas, stay away from flour, they're usually done with lard. Corn are not. There's always lots of fresh veggies, and also beans and grains. I think you'll do fine.

Have a fantastic trip!

Oh geeeeezzzzz... Boy, we get off on tangents, don't we.

Can't we all just get along?

Imagine the price of vegetables, if everyone only ate them. On the other hand, imagine the price of meat, if there were no vegetarians. If we all liked the same food, there would be an abundance of something, and none of something else.

Meat is very important to provide much needed minerals, and nutrients to MY body. I really wanted to be vegan, my body felt differently. Lab tests, and muscle comparison tests don't lie. Besides, I was replacing the meat with whole grains, which are really bad for me.

But, I know how it feels... People say, oh, a little won't hurt you. Or, they think if they lie about what's in it, I won't know.

I am very respectful of everyones dietary needs. My daughter's were both vegan. In my house, I felt like a short order cook, with separate meals for everyone, including me I learned to adapt.

Shape shifter, I'm hoping my hubby has the same about-face in regards to fish. He's game to try almost any of it, but has never like anything. Maybe the RM will change his palate!

The person asked about vegan options.....not anyones opinions on being a vegan....let's be respectful. I hate seeing this site turn into a "Facebook" catty forum.

Maybe some of you are just taking a fun jibe but just imagine someone asking for advise on here for the 1st time and getting a lecture !!!

We have travelled to Mexico many times and there are lots of options no matter what your dietary needs. I like the idea of having a card printed out in Spanish.
There is so much grown in the Yucatan And Quintana Roo. often you can find more choices than in some US or Canadian towns.

Have a wonderful holiday....and folks...be KIND!

I thnk the idea of cards written in Spanish is the best way to go. While some things may sound vegan, like tortillas, it would all depend on the kind of fat they are fried in. And refritos do generally have lard in them. I've heard there is large contingent of 7th Day Adventists down that way and since they are generally vegetarians you may want to try to find some.
And speaking of going off on tangents and hijacking threads - I too love the fish down there. Love fishing but hate eating lake fish (aside from bass.) When I head south I seek out any meal with grouper. mmmmmmm....

Corn tortillas are totally safe, just water, lime and corn.

True story about flour tortillas... they might be made with lard.

I'm with y'all on the fish. I grew up fishing. Love to fish, hate to eat it. I never liked fish, I tried, just couldn't get past the fact that it tasted like "fish." My first time in Akumal, I had fish tacos. I have no idea what possessed me, but they were the best things I had ever eaten. Now I look forward to fish in the RM. That's the only place I will eat it, though.

Make sure you look at the thread that tells you when grouper is out of season.

Kim, I don't know how you feel about trunk food, but I was also thinking that they have some things you can eat. One car has this amazing, habanero slaw, as a topping. However. You could fill up a corn tortill with that, and call it lunch. I would!

That garbanzo and cucumber dip, at Lol Ha, is really goood and refreshing. I can't have the pita chips, so I ask for it with the corn tortillas. They have a Mayan woman who comes in and make them by hand. Shoot, I could just eat those for dinner. I really think you will be in vegan heaven, down there. Tomatoes the size of your head!

Go to La Fruiteria on Wed, and or Sat, and get all the fresh, local produce you can handle.

Like me, you might want to take some "snacks" just so you have something to eat, until you get it all figured out.

I will skip the flour tortillas and refried beans for sure. Where do you find the food trucks? I got a room at HAC that has a kittchenette so I can make some food if need be. Thanks again for all the tips. I am feeling better about my options

You can have the card done very easily. Just type out what you want in English and go to babelfish.yahoo.com (lately it has been defaulting to bing for some reason but still works great) and paste the english into the first box. It will translate it into good Spanish and you're good to go.
The food trucks come down the HMB road in the morning around 9am for breakfast and the real deal is the lunch truck at about 1pm. You will hear the horn honking and have to get to the truck. It stops at about 5-6 places along the beach road starting in Akumal and goiing all the way down.
I'd bet if you showed the guy your card he would show up with something for you the next day if he didn't have something with him. He ran out of tamales one day at our place and he made a point to have some with him the next day. It got to be a ritual hanging out for the lunch truck. We could get our lunch and sit on the casita patio and enjoy. Plan on doing that very thing in a few weeks.

The breakfast food car usually makes it's first stop near El Pueblito, across from Chomak around 8 am, that would be the closest to you at HAC.
Trunk food rocks!

Glad to see other people speak up about some of the "other" comments on here that were not helpful...just lectures....I wanted to add that we just got back from our 10th trip through the Yucatan & Quintana Roo...last 2 wks at the Akumal Beach Resort...had meals out in other restaurants as well...even Lo Ha (which still has our favourite view & margaritas) has vegan options. We also splurged and went down to Tulum to have another great meal at Posada Margarita and they had vegan selections along wit their daily specials.

I am now sad to get back to get back to my own cooking (sigh) only another 300+ days to go till we return(unless the Lotto gods smile upon me!)

When we were there in October they seemed to come by, about every hour. Maybe because it was high construction season? The last one came around 10 am, and then not again until 1:00, I think.

They are food "trucks" for lunch, but not like what you think about in the US. For breakfast, it's "trunk food." Out of the trunk of a car.

The car that has the amazing slaw, he comes later, around 10:00

YUMMO!

I think you better not eat the tamales, also made with lard, traditionally, so...

I just realized I never thanked you guys for standing up for me. Thanks!

The food truck/trunk idea is really cool. I will have those cards made and see where/what I can get.

I'm all about standing up for the underdog. (if you knew how much I loved dogs, you could never be offended by that) For most of my young life, I was the one getting picked on. Once I realized how strong I was, nobody gets picked on, when I'm around.

Sounds like Grouper is the top choice, so I will definitely have him try some. Though we're not staying in Akumal (closer to PDC), we plan to spend time there, and eating there! Hey, if he still doesn't like it, I may be forced to eat his! lol
