On another topic I mentioned the sounds of the grackles in Solimon Bay. I thought they were made by grackles, but after doing a youtube search, I'm not so sure. These were black, like grackles, but the most common sound they made was a long kinda "rickeeeeeeeeey". I started calling them the Lucy birds
Anybody know what I'm referring to?

If they are the ones I am thinking of, we call them grackles too. They look like ours
at home except for the long tail. The ones at the AI's we have been to are not at all shy. They will land
right on your table and steal food off of your plate

I'm more of a lizarder than a birder but I do love those great-tailed grackles, (known as "zanate" in Mexico.)

Hi, minnjim,
I know the solid black with long legs and tails (that are irridescent blue-black when in the sun) are Great Tailed Grackles (some call them Boat Tailed) and I think the female is brown/bronze. These hang about looking for food and are not at all shy. However, when we first went to the Catalonia Royal Tulum we heard this different bird call and spotted them in the dense forest off of our balcony. CRT rooms are surrounded by huge jungle plants. Early in the mornings in the trees by our balcony we noticed some very pretty black birds, with light blue wings and yellow legs and beaks and what appeared to be their mates which had black underbody, light blue wings but black beaks and legs. They would be real quiet at times and then all of a sudden would make this long high pitched kind of call that about scared the pee out of a person! Looked these up when we got home and it turns out they are Yucatan Jays. They looked like our common Blackbirds- heavier bodies than the Great Tailed grackles and not as long-legged and had the blue wings. Maybe this is your bird!
Leave it to a Jay to have a big voice! Here's the link to a photo...

Cruise thru these photos and if you click on one it will take you to info about the bird...

Yeah, too bad for the Pack, but the Super Bowl was a blast to watch.
You get alot of birds right where you can spy on them easily at the Catalonia Royal Tulum, among other critters. I'm really looking forward to the deep jungle aspect that is surrounding the Sirenis. We'll be the people that go off the beaten path there and probably get told to get back on the path!!!

There's also a smaller blackbird that we've seen and heard along the road at Half-Moon bay.
It's song is hard to describe, but it sounds "tropical" or "exotic". Anyone know what that would be? B.

I..............think so.

I remember the sound more than the look.

It's like that girl I meet on a camping trip in 1978.
(just kidding)

Cornell Ornithology lab has recordings of all sorts of birds. This link is to the Great Tailed Grackle. There are several recording of songs and calls if you scroll down a bit.

That's a really cool site.
None of them were right on, but I'm sure that's what they were.
Thanks.

Can't resist a bird topic. Most likely Great-tailed Grackle; Boat-tailed Grackles are in the States. From your description of the sound, that's what it was.
Smaller blackbirds are most likely Melodious Blackbirds. There are Bronzed Cowbirds around, but not very many.
