We will be visiting akumal this summer and we need some suggestions on where to stay. There will be my husband and I, plus 2 adult children and one 15 yr old (total of 5) . We want to stay on the beach so we can snorkel from our door steps. It would be great if we could be facing the ocean to watch our children. We are not too interested in the all inclusive hotels. I know we will probably have to bring our dive socks because i've heard that the shoreline is rocky--OK with us. We will probably rent a golf cart to get around but don't plan on renting a car. I've looked at the differences between north and south akumal, but we are just not sure if it is worth it to stay further south to be closer to the grocery stores, etc. Our plans are to eat 'in' for breatkfast and lunch and go out for dinners so having refrigerator/stove set up is important. Another question or two: what is the best and most cost effective way to get from the airport to akumal? Can you drive the golf carts just about anywhere? or do they only travel on sidewalks? We may also go on a few scuba dives...any ideas on reputable dive shops for newbies? Thanks

All of the condos on Malf Moon Bay would fit your needs.Just search through the accomodations tab at the top of the page. We like Palya Caribe. You can face the bay and view without a problem If you go south like youy said, you would need a car (Soliman Bay). You can use a golf cart to get around the playa side of Akumal (the beach) but you can't take them to the pueblo across the highway. There are several dive shops very close by and they are all good.

I agree with both replies above and would add that USA transfers, for an additional small fee ($30 USD) will stop at a grocery store in Playa Del Carmen on your transfer from the airport to wherever you stay. When we travel with our 3 boys (and other families) we do this and stock up on the way down. Less need for a car that way.

Akumal Bay is sandy, great for swimming and snorkeling. Half Moon Bay, which is about a mile north on the small Akumal road, is full of rocks and coral - not good for swimming, good for experienced snorkelers. You can stay at the Akumal Carribe hotel or bungalows on Akumal Bay. The hotel is on the beach, the bungalows about 200' back. They both include a free breakfast, and have fridges. Some also have a kitchenette. There are two small grocery stores about a two minute walk away, as well as an adjoining inexpensive Mexican eatery. We just got back from a week at the bungalows (our 4th time). We usually get a few lunch foods on the way down at the Chedauri supermarket, which is about 10 miles north of the Akumal turnoff. The Lol Ha snack bar and restaurant (which is a few hundred feet away from the bungalows) has excellent, moderately priced Mexican and Italian food. We have also stayed at the Vista Del Mar Hotel on Half Moon Bay. This hotel and condo complex is directly on the beach, and is less expensive than most places. There is a tiny store in the building, and the Buena Vida restaurant is a few hundred feet away. Half Moon Bay is very quiet. Yes you can rent a golf cart or bikes to putt around on the small, pot holed akumal road that winds down to Yal Ku lagoon (snorkelling mecca), but you certainly can't go on the highway with them. A car can be rented at the airport for about $350 a week with all the insurances (Easyway, America), but if you don't want to, you have a few options. You can take a cab to Akumal, hire a limo, or take the ADO bus to Playa Del Carmen, and then take the Colectivo bus to Akumal. The Colectivo may even stop at the Chedauri north of Akumal. Another tip - use the ATM at the airport as opposed to the ones in Akumal, which charge exorbitant fees.
