Want to try/do something different this trip.
Is it worth trying to do in a day? How does it compare with Cozumel?
Thanks!

Where are you starting out from? If Akumal, would be a long day trip, if you could stay overnight it would be better. I love Isla and finally getting back there this year (as soon as the goldurn airfares drop a bit!).
Easiest way (other than renting a car and parking it at the garage at the Gran Puerto ferry dock, would be get yourself to PDC and take ADO to the downtown Cancun terminal (1 hour) and take taxi ($5-6) to the ferry, then ferry (20 minutes, 140 pesos pp rt) to Isla. Ferries run every 30 minutes until 8:30pm.

We spent 5 days on Isla in 2010 before heading down to Akumal and I dream of going back. Maybe next trip I'll split my time up. I searched and found my trip report. Isla info is at the beginning, and lots of pics. (I was much wordier then in TR, cause now I mostly post pics)..

I was wondering the same thing. How much is the Ferry to Isla....and where is the best place to rent a golf cart and what would the cost be there.

Any recommendations on a good place to eat lunch and or dinner.......and where there is a good beach club?

I was there years and years ago for a day with a group from Palace resorts..I don't feel I got a very good view of the Island....did a great dive on the reef off shore but other than that we only had lunch and then too a party boat back into Cancun. Ever since I feel I have missed something as I read all the wonderful posts people make about this charming little Island.

To the original poster....we were staying at the Xpu ha Palace at the time we went...not too far from Akumal (about a half hour....if that)...and it was a very doable day trip.....and from what I have seen and read...very much worth it.

Ultramar ferry is 140pesos per person rt.
I like to rent from Ciro's, cost should be about $45, in high season maybe $50-55, take your driver's license, they ask for it as a deposit. Not the closest to the ferry, but they maintain their carts well, and have carts with both seats forward facing as well as Jeep and Chevy carts (may cost a bit more for the last).
Plenty of beach clubs, the best was Sergio's Playa Sol but sadly it is closed (long unfair story), if you have not been before you might want to stick to one of the places on North Beach. Last time I liked Zama's but they usually have a $20 per person minimun for food and drinks if you want to use their pools and beach beds. Very clean bathrooms though.

Love love love Isla for what it is, a small laid back Mexican island. The best part is that there are no cruise ship passengers there! Cozumel is nice but much more commercial.
There is a ferry that leaves from the hotel zone. It's a little bit more expensive but easier to get to and closer if you are coming from Akumal way.
Not sure how old this is but here is a link with some good info.

We alway enjoyed eating at Playa Loncherios. They specialize in tic-n-xic. Whole fish served Mayan style. It's been a few years since we were there and at that time they were building something next door. Big resort, beach club not sure. :(

We alway bargin with the golf cart guys at the ferry. Just make sure they give you a good cart with big wheels....insist on it! There will be golf cart guys on the ferry too. They all want their carts back by 4:30 or 5:00. So plan on it.
Shopping is the best there. Not as much competition.
