Just wondering if anyone has taken a cab from Cancun Airport to ABR. I priced out a shuttle and it is $189 from the Airport to ABR (leg 1) and then from ABR to Playa (leg 2) and then from Playa to Cancun Airport. (final leg) It seems that it may be less expensive to take 3 individual cab rides. Cancun Cab says $75 from the Airport to ABR, and if I remember from last year it was around $40 from ABR to Playa. I'm guessing it would be a little more from Playa back to the airport. Thoughts?

Thanks for the quick replies. Just the wife and I are traveling. The $189 quote is from USA Transfers, so that got me thinking if the cab thing may be less expensive. We are going to ABR from the Airport and then to Playa to catch the ferry to Cozumel for 4 days. Then we need to get from Playa to the Airport to catch the dreaded flight home.

I think it is more because of the extra leg to Playa. Try them with just the airport to Akumal and Playa to airport legs and see what they come back with price wise. Like I said you could probably cab it from Akumal to Playa for around $30.00, maybe a little less if you negotiate it a little. That may end making the whole package a little bit cheaper, not exactly sure how much tho. But perhaps your idea will work out better. It's one of those things you have to play around with and try all the variables out to see what works out best. Good Luck and have a great time.

1st: Never pay US $ for taxis - you lose 30% right there (Beachy -sooo ashamed) But Transfer companies quote US$ If you paid for each trip separately, likely cheaper $80 US transfer to Akumal (USA Transfers) 300 pesos ($25) to PDC 300-400 pesos ($25-35) to the airport total - perhaps $130-140$

Glen you know as well as I do that most of the posted cab rates are in US$ on all the local cab rate boards, So you gotta work from that perspective!!!! It's up to the prospective passenger to ask and negotiate the ride rates before you set foot in any cab and decide what currency you are dealing in to start with.

Use a taxi between Akumal and Playa. If you need the extra space for bags, request that it be a mini van taxi. Private transfer on those legs is a rip off. I've done it with a couple different companies and they all charge you the full one-way rate. Their claim is that to take you just between Akumal-Playa (either direction), it's the same as a full CUN-Akumal since they may have to send a driver down just for you if they don't happen to have a drop off or pick up in either direction that matches the times you want. We had some flexibility so I've even asked them if they happened to have a one-way the day I wanted that didn't have passengers booked on the return. No go. They just want to charge you the full one-way for that short trip, regardless of if it's Playa-Akumal or Akumal-Playa. Prices are higher from Akumal to Playa or CUN. Coming from the Playa you can negotiate a much better rate. I guess there's more competition. From Playa I've never paid more than $30 to Half Moon Bay. From Akumal, different story. Not that many taxis and they have never been willing to negotiate. It does annoy me a bit that it's less to come to Akumal from Playa, Tulum or the airport then it is to go to these places from Akumal. Taxis in Mexico are bit of a monopoly. I think the guys in Akumal just agree not to deviate from whatever prices they set as a group.
