Tom: You hit it right on the head...nothing more special that see the little guys hatch and letting them run to the ocean......If you haven't experience this you have no idea what it is like....Tom you are one awesome person....keep up your work with CEA.... Not unique but helping out the library....going to the pueblo and seeing the school and watch how the children really seem to enjoy being in school.....

Good question Sharie, one of the unique things we've done is to build a tope in the pueblo at Puerto Morelos. Our friend Anna, a Canadian who runs a private school there, needed a tope in front of her house to slow down the many speeding cars that were a threat to her pupils, so... With only a shovel and a cheap trowel, we proceeded to build a tope, Mexican style, mixing the mud right on the street... Laying the concreto Everything went fine until La Policia showed up Luckily, Anna had all of the proper paperwork ready, so we were able to proceed. There was one scary moment when I heard my lovely wife ask one the the cops to pull his pistola and point it at me so that she could take a picture. With visions of "Jose Fife" accidentally discharging his weapon, I jumped up and told him that we really didn''t need to have him pull his gun, gracias! Because we were only allowed to block off one half of the road at a time, we finished one side and returned the next day to do the other. As each major holiday approaches, Anna has her students paint the tope. All in all, it was a fun project, we got to do something to help the kids stay safe and I think it was rather unique.

many things but this was the most personally "magical"... Yesterday we went to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve south of Tulum (a Unesco site that comprises 1.3 million acres of coast, mangrove forests, wetlands.) I did something a had read about off the beaten track about a channel that runs between 2 lagoons for over a kilometer with a natural current that let you float easily from one to another. We rented a boat with drive with another couple to drop us off to drop off at the start. It was PURE Magic. I was a little apprehensive at first but after the 1st seconds in that clear, pure water with small fishes swimming by and birds singing in the mangroves over head I knew I was in heaven. The water is naturally filtered by the limestone and mangroves & is so clear that even in the deepest parts of the channel (about 10 feet) you can still see the bottom. Ron did not do the float stayed on the pier & took a couple photos at the start and end. The boat cannot do the channel part....so it is completely peaceful. I wish I could have brought you all on this journey with me. It was also wonderful to know the Mayans used this from about 300BC. It took about 40 minutes to do the float. They give you a lifejacket to float with if you want....no tourist souvenirs except memories...no one taking photos to sell you. Unfortunately this is our last day in Akumal...I will do a trip report with photos when I am back in -34 C. weather in Canada.

It was about 8 years ago, but remember it like yesterday! The darn bikes up in the air, on thin wire at "Hidden Worlds", that are controlled by your foot pedal?Well, my leg chose not to work that day so couldnt control my speed and i will never forget all the mexicans, running, panicking, on the ground under me, yelling at me"no rapido, no rapido..lol..but i could not slow that thing down, so ended up "bumping" next person ahead of me, sure glad it was my other half, though he wasnt too happy.lol.Actually, that whole day was unique, from the ride into the jungle in the "Clampettes" truck with no floor boards, to swimming in the ceynotes, it was an incredible unique day to me.

Wow guys...thanks for all the ideas...yep, that float down the canal at Sian Ka'an is on my list! Spa day at the shelter on Saturday and maybe helping out at the shelter are on it too! Do they still do night snorkels? Any bio-luminescence in the area?

Linda - We are planning a long summer trip (2 months) and will have our children visiting throughout the trip. Is there any more info you can share on your float, i.e. where you rented the boat, or where in the Biosphere the channel is, etc.? Thanks. Mike

That sounds like a fun trip Linda, been to Sian Ka'an twice but never did a boat thing, when you get back and caught up a bit, hope you can tell us more about it, I'd like to do something like that but without taking a tour

quote:
ORIGINAL: Tortuga Tom My choice is easy. I think working with nesting mommas and helping sick babies is pretty unique! Yup, thanks to a well timed trip the end of August, and getting to meet and spend time with TT and the lovely Maggie, 3 things were knocked off my bucket list; hatching, release and nesting! Being about to witness these 3 things was wonderful and I have memories I'll never forget. Standing on the beach at 1:30 am and casting shadows on the sand (thanks to the blue moon) and watching the mama lay her eggs; PRICELESS ... Thank again Tom! Also unique to my own trips down are the times I load my car with dog food and other assorted donations and drive 1.5hrs one way up 307, and then Selvetica rd, through Leona Vicario and over to Tierra de Animales sanctuary. I take the day, and go lay some loving on over 200 dogs who are living free from harm and will hopefully get adopted at some point. I also get to see the amazing transformation that 4 hectares in the jungle has gone through in 2 short years. I see where my money has gone and the good it does. This is special to me. This upcoming trip, I am bringing a plaque to TdA, to hang in memory of my mother, (she was a huge dog lover - wonder if it's hereditary!?). Ricardo has built a beautiful pathway and it's dedicated to my mother. The quote will be in both English and Spanish. My mother would have been so proud of this!!

For the Muyil channel float we did the tour with Ismael Caamal Angulo from www.communitytourssiankaan.com cel: 983 124 80 01 The Muyil ruins site is about 20 minutes south of Tulum and you pay a separate entrance to visit the ruins. The dirt road to get to the lagoon is about a minute further heading south to your left. You can drive down and just book one of the boat there, but I would contact someone like Ismael 1st...he spoke perfect English...studied in Toronto for a couple years and is also a great bird expert. They are all part of a co op that are licenced to be in the reserve and protect the area. I did not shoot video or take a water proof camera...I just wanted to enjoy the experience, but I found this Youtube video that gives you a short glimpse of part of the float...it is much more magical than photos can do justice to. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCf_1yzavHE (our guide explained the nature aspect but did not float with us which I liked so we could just enjoy our surroundings and the wind and the bird songs.) fell free to private email if you have more questions...
