Any thoughts? We just purchased short fins - they are very short and I believe called practice fins - as we found our other fins very long (split fins) and sometimes when trying to manouver in the water there was always the chance that they would be brushing up against the coral. Also, they were very awkward to get on and off as we have not mastered the art of putting our fins on in the water and being graceful about it. We are the dufus' who put their fins on and walk backwards into the water -Hey, it works :

So, to make a long story longer, I am now looking at these short fins and thinking Holy Crap is it going to be like snorkelling with no fins???

Would appreciated your experience....

Thanks,

Susan :)

I prefer short fins..less chance of hitting coral or my face (yes it's happened)

Watching this thread with interest.
I too am considering the short fins for our upcoming trip for the same reasons as well as the reduced amount of space in our luggage. I was looking specifically at the Finis Zoomers. Anybody have any experience with them that they'd care to comment about? I like that they are full foot and not just strapped.

I have been using them for about 5 or more years now and i love them. For your garden variety snorkeling they have plenty of push.

For diving you need long ones.

I changed from long to short 2 trips ago & I am very happy with them. Easier to manuver.

I, to have converted to the short fins. Lighter and easier to pack. Besides while snorkeling I am in no hurry!

speaking of fins, I think I will cut my shorty fins a bit up the middle and see if that makes a difference. also I came up with an idea I will try out in May. It is so much easier to get waist deep and then put the fins on instead of trying to walk backwards but going through the rubble in bare feet can be painful. so I will wear socks with a thin shoe lining inside to protect my feet, instead of booties, that should fit inside the fin. I got my name noodle lady because I had a noodle cut to fit around my waist tied with an elastic cord. now I just bring a water ski vest which has alot of mesh so it's not bulky. I don't like the inflatable vests, I feel like its strangling me and I don't like the straps.

The wife and the couple we travel with have all switched to the shortys over the last few years, and love them. They say they are better to walk into the water with, put on in the water, and less tiring if you snorkel a long time. Plus they pack easier!

Thanks all for the replies - and yes, one of the reasons is easier to pack and to transport to different places like cenotes and Yal Ku. I guess we will leave the long fins at home and get used to the short ones. They are full foot too so that is great.

Have I said that I love this forum - What a great bunch of people!!

Oh, and thank you Seagoat for the link to the previous thread. Tons of info there. Our split fins are very long with a full foot and we do love them but the shorties are a full foot also and they are a very good fit so looking forward to trying them out.

Thanks again :)

I trimmed about 3" off my fins a couple of years ago. They are still a bit longer than the shorties and my wifes but they work just fine.

Yep-another fan of the short fin, if all you are doing is snorkeling. Won't kick up the sand as much and less chance of hitting coral. Plus, easy to pack-even as carry on in our back packs. My husband and I bought ours from US Divers and have been very happy with them. Take them everywhere. Have fun!

I like shorter fins for snorkeling also. But there is no need to walk to waist deep water to begin snorkeling! Please, go horizontal at about a foot or so of water, you will float!

Yes, NancyJo, and they are the most comfortable fins I've ever worn. The rubber is so soft and plyable. Crunch was so tired of me raving about them that she bought some too.

Mine were $19 US from leisurepro.com and shipping was free about a year ago and now they are $19.95 plus $4.95 shipping.

Actually I think so! I've had a terrible time trying to find short fins for my size 14 feet (I know, why bother with fins??)
