I said this on Facebook this morning. They've lost their ever loving mind. I checked out American Airlines DFW to CUN, hardly anything under $500. If you want to fly normal hours, $550. So I said screw this! I'm using my miles for my next trip. They want to route me through Newark, then transfer to JFK, then take me to Cancun. Insanity! It's basically a dirty trick, where they render my miles useless.

Then there is Spirit Airlines. They are very cheap, under $300, until I got the $135 baggage fee slapped in my fat face. It would probably be cheaper to go all layered up with 3 sets of clothes on with no bags at all, buy clothing and toiletries at Walmart, then donate everything on departure.

Sun Country comes in at $450. Tomas said they had a decent experience on Sun Country. Does anyone have anything pro or con to say about Spirit or Sun Country? Heck with American. They priced themselves out of the market.

You will find a lot of Spirit haters, but I will fly them if the total of flight+bag is cheaper than the other airlines fares. The plane is the same as the others except no free drinks or snacks of any kind. I have the $9 club membership so I get cheaper fares and discounted bag fee.

Maybe wait for a sale or consider a stop in ATL or somewhere?

Try skyscanner.com On the date field, select "whole month".

Prices for us for April had been up around $600pp (from middle-of-nowhere, IA) for a couple of months, I was watching it like a hawk. It dipped down by $20pp, we finally just said screw it and booked. I'm not checking back - whatever. We refuse to fly red-eye, or do more than one hop (non-stop doesn't exist from here). So, we have good, assigned seats, good flight times, one free bag each.... and I don't have to think about it anymore, it's a done deal.

We did use points for one flight, but ours are the kind we can use on any flight, any airline, any time. Thank God for that!

Cammie and I did points in October. We went DFW, Pensacola, Miami, Cancun on the way down. LOL! We had fun cutting up in the airport, putting on all of our snorkel gear, walking around in fins. But that was just too many hops. Never more said the raven.

I wonder Bosco, does Spirit make you pay to select your seat or can you just fly in whatever seat they give you?

I hear you. Been watching fares from Portland, OR for a couple months. Family trip to Akumal in June for 5 of us. Most I've ever paid is $475, usually find deals for $375-425. So far $600 is the lowest I've seen. I'm giving it til mid February then I'll have to bite the bullet since this is a special trip and already planned. We may have to consider checking out the Pacific side of Mexico in the future if this keeps up, or just stick to camping for our vacations.....

Doug, the only thing you'll want from Spirit is DISTANCE.

Flew Spirit to Vegas last spring. Once you add in the fees - which are charged both was, and if you don't pay in advance, get jacked up at the airport check-in counter - you might as well be flying American. On top of that, their customer-service skills are severely lacking. I'll never fly Spirit again.

Flew Sun Country on the last Mexico trip and was very happy with them, wouldn't hesitate to fly with them.

When I started looking last month the fare was 525 pp from Knoxville on US Air. Other airlines were higher. Then it suddenly jumped to almost 600 pp. I was getting panicky and started watching daily to book for our trip in May. Last Wed it dropped to 560, about 70 dolllars cheaper for the two of us. I went ahead and booked and today it is 643 pp. So I am kicking myself for not booking when it was 525, but at least am glad I am not paying almost 1300 round trip for the two of us. I seems like every year it is up about one hundred dollars. Don't know how much longer we will be able to spring for it.

Thank you. That's going to be my choice I think.

Airlines upped their prices when the fuel prices jumped, but I don't see any reason to inflate them now.

Hmmm, my suggestion is to just stay in Mexico longer each time you go to warrant the increased flight price.

Cheers!

Doug

Ditto...most of my flights to CUN from DFW have been SunCountry as well and no compliants!

We like Sun Country...they are pretty safe forward with their pricing..not a lot of game playing...They are usually on time also. We will be flying with them in March....And my Daughter is flying to Palm Springs in Feb.. She has flown them quite a few times and has no complaints....Not sure about Spirit...no experience there..We see they are cheap and have a lot of deals but no idea on their service. Hope this helps. some.

I take what they give me and it's usually not bad. I have noticed the other airlines try to milk you for advance seat selection or better seat also.

Reading this I feel like I hit the jackpot when I got our tickets for this tripnlast April. I was browsing one day & came across direct flights both ways on Delta using miles. Cost us 35k miles for ea h ticket. Since then best I found using 45k miles was. Changing planes in Atlanta. When I found this xealni booked it for 12 days not knowing for sure if my wife could get off or not. Took the chance & it worked out.

We are flying Sun Country Feb. 18 ...non stop from Lansing, Mi ... 550 pp including one bag and all other taxes etc..... more than I have ever paid but for non stop I'm thrilled ... no going thru customs in Miami, Detroit or Atlanta, worth a lot to me! Glad to hear good reviews on them .... looked at your ticker you will be there a couple days ahead of us, will you be back to Akumal later?

I'm booked with American, Fresno/Dallas/Cancun. They already moved our arrival back an hour, so I've been trying to get switched to an LA/Miami/Cancun red-eye (I can never sleep the night before anyway), which flies into Cancun 7 hours earlier than what we have booked. I've been waiting for a drop so I can absorb the change fee- but instead of a drop, today I saw $100 increase from the weekend pricing! Right now even the flight I booked us on in Sept. is up almost $200. At this rate, we will not be changing flights and I'm still kicking myself for not seeing this option in the first place.

Tomas is right. We always had great experiences with Sun Country. We got our flights on American in May to Cozumel for about $450 leaving Sat the 11th. You could always bag drag to Cun from Coz if they are still at that price.....

We are finally getting some good options at CVG, but they are still loco in price. Up up and away seems to be the thinking....at the prices they are charging, I won't be flying from home..have to make a drive elsewhere. Glad to see Frontier starting service here though..gives me more options..and chances to shake my head at the ridiculous cost of flying.

We just booked for May last Sunday.

After watching package prices every day along with KAYAK airfare alerts, the airfare nose-dived for two days and the package price went down almost $300. We jumped on it and are done with it.

After traveling to Mexico in May the last 7 consecutive years - almost all flying on Frontier - we've come to the educated conclusion that late Jan/early Feb is the optimum time for pricing, at least in our market. Maybe it's that "special time" when the Christmas credit card bills hitting some people and others are waiting on their tax news and everyone is holding on to their wallets.

Either way, this time of year always seems to throw out a few bargains, if you are diligent...

I'd kill for $500pp in Cincinnati. Prices to Coz never seem to drop below $725pp usually higher
To Cacun its staying above $650. We'd have to drive to Chicago for anything decent
