I would to donate several hours of my time to the local animal rescue...is there such a program as this?  My daughter is a vet  tech and I know would love to too!  Cleaning cages, washing dogs, herding cats (yeah, right)...anyone have any insider info?

It's quite a ways inland from PdC, but the name the place you want is Tierra de Animales.

http://www.tierradeanimales.org/

You can email them and request info.

helpmexicandogs@hotmail.com

By the way, I'm considering adopting or fostering a dog. Can someone detail that whole process again, including the transportation back to Texas?

Hi -

Here is another organization: http://playaanimalrescue.org/

They have a Dog SPA day every Sat. for volunteers - to come wash, walk, interact with the animals.

Have a great vacation !

Doug, Adoption is easy...let them know which dog you want to adopt, paperwork is all done on their end. Escorts are always needed!

Tierra de Animales have dog visits, washes on Saturdays. It can be busy, and overwhelming, but if your daughter is a vet tech she would LOVE IT.

Coco's Cat Rescue in PDC have kitten cuddling on Fridays.

Playa Animal Rescue do puppy/dog washes cuddles on Saturdays also.

Doug, please please please have a look at Pemex at Tierra de Animales. He was the boyfriend to the female I adopted last year from TdA. They lived at the gas station in Leona Vicario, until they were rescued by Ricardo at TdA. Pemex is a labby hound type boy and it bothers me to this day that I could not take him. He would be a perfect fit for you, I think he would be a "man's dog".

It is easy peasy to transport a dog from MX to US/CDA. TdA does all the paperwork and readies the dog, meets you at the airport and ensures everything is good. You pick up the dog on landing and take it through customs.....(the state of Texas may have some agricultural details) and you head for home with your new furkid.

Please, just take a look at Pemex at least? Ricardo or Lisa can tell you more about him.

Really not much. We found the person, the fabulous Sailbait that did the escort, but the rescue organizations really will do all that stuff. They take care of everything and I mean everything. You just pay the airfare if you are adopting the pet. If you are just escorting a dog then they meet you at the airport with everything ready and all you do is check them in (they pay the airfare and have the animal crated with all needed paperwork) and then escort them through customs at the other end.

Any time we have a trip coming up i just email Andrea to let her know the dates and she will let us know if they have a pet needing transport.

As far as dog selection, I need someone that is as close to a pure bred lab as possible. I'm in contact with Tierra and we'll see what they have.

I know I sound very picky about which dog I choose, but this dog would dnot be for me. It would be for out rescue program. When people go to our website, they don't want to see any white marks on the chest. They don't want skinny heads. They want that very typical black lab, yellow lab, choco lab look and feel. If it were just for me, I would just go pick out the most loving one I could find.

As a dog "placer", do you find the fact that a dog is from Mexico, an attractive "novelty". Or is it the same as if the dog is from right down the street?

They are less entitled and skinnier!

At least until they have been in your home for more than a week.

I haven't placed any dogs but I have found that people become very interested in my two Mexi-mutts because they don't look like what people expect a Mexican street dog to look like. People are super-impressed with my male pointer dog's exceptionally polite manners and demeanor. Its mostly his personality, though he is very well trained in obedience, rally and agility. More than one person has suggested he is actually British because he is so regal and reserved!

Once people hear how awful the conditions are for Mexican street dogs, they are more apt to be interested in them. And it seems that ANY rescue adoption is in vogue now, which isn't a bad thing! People that rescue have big hearts, no matter the circumstances of the rescue. <3
