When we were in Akumal in Sept.2012, rented a car from the arch in Akumal for the day. Marcellas or Marcus his name I think, it was with Executive Car Rental. Five of us wanted to go to Ek Baalam for the day. $50 for the car, so split was pretty cheap. Followed mapchicks map, the one that is the Mayan Adventure Map, it has Coba, Ek Baalam, and the others on it. All sorts of stuff to do over in that area, we felt safe all the way. Easy drive from Akumal, I think it was about 2 hours, we left after breakfast, went to the Ruins, then stopped in Vallodolid for lunch. Nice weather at ruins, raining till Valladolid , had a nice lunch, wife and friends did some leather shopping in town, its the place to buy leather goods if interested, much better pricing then anywhere else. Ruins were great, not many people around. $9 to get in, or private tour with guide, he wanted $60 for our group. If we do again, would stay in Valladolid for the night. One day is not enough, but is doable. We got home around 5:00 PM.

We stayed at Hotel Meson de Marques, good food. Sorry cannot help on the transport, we had a rental car, takes about 2 hours to get there via the Coba road, then at the roundabout take the turnoff to Chemax, (second turnoff at the traffic circle) and it will take you straight into Valladolid. Rio Lagartos is great, we took a boat ride to see all the birds and flamingos. Some guides will try and make the birds fly so you can get pictures, this is bad for the birds as it disturbs their nesting, just FYI.

The first bull is always butchered and sold to people immediately. (I have pics of that but thought it would be a bit much for this forum). The locals use every last bit of the bull. This is standard for any local correda (I've been to half a dozen of them). The rest of the bulls are not killed but there is a lot of rodeo and riding and musica. If you are in the square facing Meson, take the street that runs along the left side. It is one or two blocks on the left around the corner. a search for Hotel Aurora Colonial will get you there. The fair is fantastic. It was a big as any county fair I've seen. It is on the road towards Chichen Itza only 1-2 km outside of town. There was a little parking lot run by the fire dept. across from the entrance. Definitely worth the trip.

We took the bus from Tulum over (60 or 70 pesos then?) and stayed overnight at the Hotel Maria de la Luz...across the square from the Meson del Marques and half the price. Nice buffet in the morning and a great restuarant where you can over look the square...felt european. Great place to visit and see the real Mexico. You could hire a cab to take you over to Ek Balam.
