Has anyone flown with AirTran Pittsburgh to Cancun? My agent recommended this option. Nonstop flight and one free checked bag per person. I have seen some bad reviews on AirTran. Any experiences to share?

We did Chicago to Cancun. Crappy airline but it got us there. I have several other non stop choices so I wont use them again unless its a heck of a sale.
My daughter just used them to Orlando and said the plane was small and dirty and doesn't want to use them again either.
If its your only choice go for it. The seats are tiny and there are no perks but it got us to paradise!

Thanks Tracie for the info. This seems to be what I am reading from reviews. I am considering it because it is our only non-stop option from here!

I fly airtran all the time from Dayton Ohio to Tampa Florida. I have never had a problem with them. I have never had a problem with it being clean and very rarely do I run into a rude staff member. I have never used them internationaly.

Then I would definitely use them! Bring a tablet for movies or a good book. No entertainment.

We use to use them to go to Florida out of Pitt. We use UsAir or United out of Pitt. But they were not non stop. Good luck.

I have flown airtran domestically and internationally and have no complaints. They are the same as Delta, etc.

These days it's just a greyhound bus ride in the sky so I take whatever gets me there the cheapest.

I can remember complaining about the tv dinner meals they used to serve in coach.
Now if the mini pretzels they give you get any smaller you will need tweezers to eat them

We used Air-tran non stop from Austin to Cancun this past summer for our family trip, 6 adults, 3 kids and it was great, nothing special but the price was sure right and it got us there and back without any stops or layovers!! We would use them again!
Good luck and have a great vacation

Just checked Air-tran non-stop in Feb, friday flights, and its just under $400.00 per person tax included!

Jazz, Are you sure you get 1 free checked bag pp. I was thinking Air Tran charged for all checked bags domestic and international. I went to their website and could find no possible you can get free checked bags. In fact checked bags went up to $25 per bag starting mid Feb. Maybe your TA knows something I don't, or gets you a special deal. I'm thinking if you're checking bags it will cost you $50 pp. more round trip.

We will not fly AirTran again. They have scrunched down the seat spacing (seat pitch) another couple of inches. If you are over 6' tall, you will be VERY uncomfortable. We flew AirTran TPA-DTW back in mid-June, 2012 and it was awful. I had to have one leg out in the aisle in order to get into the seat. I looked up toward the front of the plane and saw the same thing going on with a lot of other "tall" men.

And ... from the AirTran web site ----

"1st and 2nd Checked Bag Fee
Effective for tickets purchased on or after December 15, 2012, for travel on or after February 13, 2013, first checked bag fee is $25 and second checked bag fee is $35 when bag fees apply." That fee applies EACH way on a round trip ticket.

Other than those factors, I don't know of any recent revelations of safety, maintenance, or customer service issues that should cause me any concerns.

The flight we are taking with AirTran is an Apple charter. I think that is why we get the free checked bag. It is part of the Apple package deal. Thanks for the helpful info.
