Should we bring our own snorkeling gear for our week long trip? Can anyone tell me how much it would cost to rent gear for a week?
Thank You!

We always take our own in our carry on backpack.
Loose our luggage and we can still do what we love to do in the Roo!
I also would much rather have my equipment that I have cleaned and I know it
fits me.

Are you planning to rent from a dive shop or participate in an "excursion"? I've seen the equipment that some of these groups use and I'd bet yours is superior. For one, the snorkles tend to be a simple tube - no float-trap at the intake, no purge valve - and the mask may or may not fit properly.
You do not want to be disappointed. I highly recommend bringing your own or renting from the dive shop.

If you have your own gear that you know fits you, and if you have space in your luggage for it, bring your own.

Welcome to LG Campsunset!

I always bring my own. Fit, especially with a mask is very important. And I really don't want to use a snorkel that dozens of others have used.

I put it in my carry-on, because it's the LAST thing I want to lose out of checked bags!

First!  Welcome to the Website!!!

Most definitely bring your own gear.

Don't have to use something that may or may not be cleaned properly.
Will make sure you actually have good equipment and it fits properly if you take your own.
And most importantly, you spend all the time snorkelling, not waiting in line to get equipment or drop it off.

Cheers!

Doug

When we went in December, we took our own gear. I got a nice set at Dicks before we left, and it worked out fine. We did have to rent life jackets, but we're going to buy some of the inflatable ones for our next trip! I had never snorkeled before, and I cannot tell you how cool it was to see all of those fish and things, and especially the turtles!! I'm hooked!! Can't wait to go back!!

Go to your local dive shop. Everyone's face is a different size and shape and they will properly fit a mask to your face. There is nothing worse than a leaky mask. Get a snorkel with a anti-splash top and a purge valve at the bottom. Also the gear at the dive shops is usually better quality than the sports stores. It is cheaper to buy good quality stuff once.

Yeah: what jackfish said! What else could you possibly need?

I actually did not say bring your own gear. This trip down we're just going to have one full day in Akumal. Since I don't want to pay for an extra bag, I'm going to rent my gear for that one day, use my carry on for all of my stuff and use my free check in bag for toys and clothes for the local kids.

It's rather important to consider how much you're going to snorkel. I'm just going to make one or two snorkels. I can wash my own gear before I go out, though I will probably pack my snorkel.

Doug, I didn't see snorkels on Dive centers list of rentals .... so taking yours might be a good idea ..

However, since they offer snorkel tours, they have to have them. And I assume they simply change the mouthpiece after each use. But I'll pass.
