We spent a week at Fantasy Island Resort in French Harbour on the south shore. We flew Halifax to Montreal with Porter Air (regional) and it seems they knew hwat I had in mind.

Then on to Raotan. The resort is not fancy. It is clean, all rooms face the ocean and have closet, drawers for clothes, mini fridge and a small table and chairs.
Our view from the room

Beach was great and this area was a terrific swim and kayak place

there were lots of foliage and critters.

This one was a nuisance - you couldn't leave the balcony door open or anything out on the balcony or your chair.

But awwwwww......

Unfortunately it was windy all week. Ron dove every morning but getting back on the boat was a challenge. It also meant I didn't get to snorkel in the good place until the last 2 days. The bay off the beach hardly had any sealife in it. This path leads to a gazebo where a shore dive is available and snorkeling is good.

I din't get to explore all of it because it was still choppy when I went but I did see some pretty cool stuff. Coral and fish were everywhere!.

I love Christmas tree worms and they were plentiful and in many colours.

A couple of other critters

Beautiful photos and it looks lovely. Did you plan your vacation on your own or book through a tour operator? We are from Northern NB and do fly out of Halifx occasional but can fly from Moncton with Porter and are always looking for new destinations. Our only criteria is cleanliness and snorkelling.

Thanks so much for posting and your underwater photos are excellent. They really are clear and capture the colors well.

Susan

We had a sunwing package from Montreal direct to Roatan./Transat does it also.

I was surprised the pictures were clear bucause visibility was poor after being windy for at least 5 days. However. that area was only 8 to 12 feet deep. Just beyond there, it dropped off significantly to the dive area/boat channel. Beyond the boat channel was supposed to be shallower again with lots to see..

The snorkel highlight was seeing a juvenile spotted drum fish! It is pretty much a black and white ribbon with a small body attached. Ron has seen them while diving and I figured I would never see one in the wild since they alwasy seem to down a ways and hiding under a ledge. But this guy was hiding only about 8 feet down. Indulge me.

The main complaint at the resort was the food and drink. We expected to be sampling some Honduran dishes but nope - not one. There was always plenty of food but very little variety and no imagination. We could have been at a buffet anywhere in Canada or the US. It was very disappointing.
The included beer was Stroh's (local was extra!), there were 6 cocktails and you could get tequila, gin and rum mixed with pop or juice. The wine was really bad.
You could buy better drinks (and we did buy some wine) but it rather missed the point of being all inclusive.
However, we did not starve or stay totally sober (gin and tonic was fine)

The place has real potential but they need a major attitude change on the food and drinks.

Ron liked the dive operation and that always makes me happy.

His highlight was seeing 7 different seahorses over the week. Here are a few of his pictures.

And a green moray that followed them around on one dive.

Sea horses are why I wanna dive! I so want to see one! Loved your photos & that bright green lizard. The monkeys sound like they were annoying. Although the baby one was sure cute!!! Was the dive shop right at the resort?

Yes, it was just beyond that line of trees in the sunset picture. It took about 2 or 3 minutes from our room.
