After a lovely week at Isla Holbox t the Mawimbi, we have been at ABR for a few days and have found it as wonderful as always. Yes, the swing bar is now roped off with guards but other than that we have found every thing as wonderful as always....only complaint is the only bar now seems to always be filled with smokers and it is so bad that you can't sit in there in the evenings without breathing smoke, it seems to hang in the air....I hope they fix this by making this a smoke free environment. Families with children trying to watch the show in the evening left because of this. No one should have to breather second hand smoke. The pasta station (which I loved where they made pasta to order is also gone- at least for the few days we have been here)...but we always find a lot to eat choice wise. I have to say that even though this period of Jan. is usually a little quieter in high season...the beach by Lo Ha is always packed full in the afternoons....I have never seen so many people in past years...I go down there for a swim and snorkel in the mornings only. We spent the afternoon at Xcacel Beach and after all these years visiting this area finally hiked to the cenote there through an atmospheric tunnel of mangroves ...spotted a beautiful White Ibis, the cenote is lovely! The beach was fairly empty and went for a swim there....many people were snorkelling and said it was good. I will try & get photos up in the next few days...

We always found the main bar area to be excessively smoky, as well. We would try to position ourselves among tables of non-smokers, but it never failed.... someone would joint those tables and light up, or those people would get up & move on and smokers would immediately move in..... We started sitting along the edge of the main bar closest to the ocean, there always seemed to be a breeze there the would blow the smoke away - but then we couldn't get any internet access on our Ipad, we had to sit over by the picture-guy's booth to pick that up. We found ourselves constantly moving to avoid the smoke. It would be nice if part of the main bar could be designated non-smoking! (And if the internet access area could be broadened as well?) And - our son is going to be VERY disappointed if the pasta station isn't there in April - he ate pasta almost every lunch & dinner.

Yes I did mention it to management again...but I think it will take a lot more people complaining. 2 years ago I politely said the same thing but so far no changes on the smoking issue!

Wow... Sounds as if the food issues are getting worse and worse. In May 2012, the food was decent. Not anywhere near the offering of place like Grand Palladium, but good enough and tasty. Dinner always featured grilled-to-order fish and chicken, the sides were varied and tasty and the pasta bar was there for both lunch and dinner. In October 2012, the only fresh grilled item was fajitas (and the grill wasn't hot enough, so they were sort of "boiled" tasting) 2 nights out of 9 & the requisite roast beast one evening. Other than that, it was chafing station entrees only and the sides were very "budget". We've never been served bland variations of cabbage, squash and chaya so many days in a row. Ugh... The Pasta Station was hit and miss - open for some lunches and dinners and closed for others - but it was the best thing in the dining room when it was operational. We usually plan a few lunches and dinners in Akumal, but this was the 1st trip to ANY A/I where we walked into the lunch buffet two days - as well as the dinner buffet another evening - and actually found nothing that looked remotely appetizing. And even though we're confessed "foodies", we're usually pretty easy to please. Hey, two trips in a row to ABR? We're not exactly high-maintenance!!! For both of those meals we ended up walking into town to unexpectantly "forage"... And now, even the Pasta Station is gone!?!? Sort of make you wonder what's going to happen next. Grrr... ABR is off our radar for awhile. Decent dining options on a ten-day trip is way too important to our vacation enjoyment. And we refuse to pay A/I prices then plan on "eating out" because of necessity half the time. I already brought my own tequila to the resort the last two trips so I wouldn't be subjected to the horrors of Jose Cuervo... Snow
