I'm thinking of a March trip to Akumal and expect the panga fishing to be good right out of Akumal Bay. Hoping to fish with Francisco or Luis. But we've never been south of Tulum and think that a few nights in Xcalak might be cool too for snorkeling, fishing, and maybe even scuba diving.
Is Punta Allen just another hour or two farther down the road from Xcalak,
or is it a whole different road?
I've read on here that the road to Punta Allen can be a kidney killer and you may even need more than a Tsuru to make the trip? Surely I would need a day to drive there?, a night's sleep there, then finally a day's fishing, a night's sleep, and day to drive back.
Do you think it's worth a three day trip to get in one day of fishing the flats with Pancho?
(I'm hoping trollboy8 can hook me up with Pancho.)
I know a couple of nights in a real fishing village might be a bit "primitive",
but would my wife still keep me if I made her spend two nights there?
Recommendations for a hotel in Punta Allen would be appreciated! Thanks!
Recommend a restaurant & bar too. Thanks, again!

Puenta Allen is at best, half a day. Lots of flats fishin' along the way, The road condition changes with every rain, so it could be smooth, or really bad, There are a numbers of points to get in the flats. Some good , some not so much. G-earth has fairly good maps, even if they are a few years old. Its an adventure!! Go for it!

Two different roads. Punta Allen is south of Tulum, drive the beach road until it ends.
To get to Xcalak (which I prefer), take the 307 south of Tulum pueblo, stop for gas (and maybe lunch) and the road to Majahual and Xcalak is just a few miles past Limones. It is now well marked, just watch for the signs for Majahual. Turnoff is on the left, then maybe 30 minutes to where the road splits (straight ahead for Majahual, right turnoff for Xcalak) and another 45 minutes or so to Xcalak. Never been fly fishing but most folks swear by Victor (Victor Castro), had him once for a guide on a trip to Bird Island and snorkeling and he is great. Personally I did not like Punta Allen, not sure why.

I can definitly get you set up with Pancho in Punta Allen. Takes much longer to get to Xcalak, but on better roads. Fishing is less expensive in Xcalak but likely very comparable to Ascencion Bay (certainly less pressured). If you want more specifics, feel free to e-mail me.
