Closing in on our 3rd trip to Paradise/Akumal and looking at making a trip to Muyil this time.

Does anyone have thoughts or experiences for/against seeing this place; solo or with a group tour? It seems we can just take the car and drive down there, explore, etc....but have also read that others went with a tour and were able to access areas that perhaps we couldn't if we did it by ourselves?

Thanks!

Four of us went a couple of years back. We had a car at the time and just drove south on 307 through Tulum. It's about 20 minutes south of the pueblo (don't be embarrassed if you drive past it ...I think everyone does). We pulled in, paid the entrance fee (can't remember what it was, but it wasn't much), parked the car and just started walking around. No guides that we saw, although it might be different now. Our only issue was the mosquitoes. The other couple headed back to the car because of them and DH and I saw what we could. There is a tour that takes you down to the water, but we didn't go.

Suggestions? Bring lots of water .... it's in the jungle and very hot and humid. Wear very comfortable shoes as the walkways are very rocky. Mosquito repellant is a necessity ... the mosquitoes can carry you away. Go with an open mind....it is not a very popular site and still very raw.

I thought it was worth doing, but I don't think I would go back.

Donna

We also went with a group of four and drove ourselves.  It was February and very warm in the jungle, but we had no issues with bugs of any kind.  It is a small site.  You really do not need a guide.  There is an extra fee if you follow the path to the lagoon.  This area is in the bioreserve.  Climb the tower (if you dare) for a wonderful view.  Boat tours are available.  We did not due to wind and waves and time constraints, but they looked interesting.

Enjoy!

You can spend 30 minutes or a few hours there. I've never seen a guide there and we've been there several times. Like to walk out to the lagoon. There is a small entrance fee and another 40 or so to walk through the jungle to the lagoon. You just park and walk in. There are ruins down a path off to the left and straight ahead at the site. Walk around the small pyramid and you'll see the trail going to the lagoon. About half way out there is an observation platform you can climb and catch the view.

We drove to Muyil a couple years ago. Very inexpensive entrance fee. There were about 4 people there. This is a small site but quite impressive- no guide required. The mosquitos were waiting for us and were the size of small helicopters. The front entrance guy ran to the store to get us some Autan which saved the day. Take lots of water with you - there is no snack bar. We walked through the jungle for 1/2 hour or so and paid another small fee to a tollkeeper. There was a bamboo 2 story lookout tower which Mr. Noodle tried to scale but it made me very nervous so he eventually came down. We walked another 1/2 hour and came upon the lagoon. There was a building there and several pangas with the captains snoozing in the shade. For about $30 we got a 2 hour boat ride through the lagoon, saw lots of water birds, through 1000 year old canals the Mayans built as a trade route to the sea and a small customs building. There were lots of small fish in the canals and we could have swam or snorkeled. This was a great trip - no crowds and very inexpensive. You could sign up for a tour and pay alot of money but you can do it yourself. I don't think collectivos come down here and taxis aren't cheap so if it was me, I'd rent a car for at least a day or two to do some of these out of the way trips. My suggestion is to go fairly early in the day as this is a good 1/2 day trip. Awesome trip hope to do it again some day.

We agree. Great site in my eyes. Very well preserved. Maps provieded ....for free??? I think. Next visit to the water for sure. With the path to the lagoon....Is the tribe that was there responsible for water transfer or something? The history of the location of site and what they were doing eludes me/

Highly recommend. & DO NOT MISS the restaurant across the highway. Fan freakin tastic tortilla soup ......Go early to ruins and have lunch there. All locals.....tells ya a not miss.....and truckers ta boot. Great bar. Tony and Joanne gave us the heads up on it. Former chef from GORM is the guy. & his broterh Enrique. Telin ya GREAT day trip and ya can be back wherever by 1

Here's link to our day at Muyil and that restaurant. You can't miss it. Basically right across 307 from the ruins entrance.....a hair south. Truckers pop in often....reminded me of a mexican truck stop. Been a while though. Too long. Anyone know for sure?

After the crowds at Tulum ruins this was a breath of fresh air. It may be different now, but in 2011 there were very few people there. Bug spray, good shoes and water. Our favorite so far.

Not sure of the name of the restaurant, but it is hard to miss, about half a block south and opposite side of the road from the ruins, ate here twice, good food and clean banos. Had breakfast once, lunch another time coming back from Xcalak.

Muyil is a very nice site to visit, wish the signage was better as we missed the turnoff for the lagoon

Don't miss the walkway to the lagoon, the observation tower and the boat ride. The site is actually called Chunyaxche (SP?), so that is the sign on the left side of the road, the village itself is Muyil.
