I don't think they have announced the official start yet, someone usually posts it over on the IMI website. Last year it started mid-May, in 2011 it was in June. Depends when the sharks start to show up and the government sets the dates. Hope you get to do it.

We did the whale shark tour at the beginning of the season one year and had to search and search for the shark. When we finally came upon them, there were just a few in the area. I saw a trip report about a month later into the season and there were sooo many whale sharks. I wish our trip had been planned for later. We still thoroughly enjoyed the experience, but if I were going back, I would wait until the season was well under way. Of course, the whale sharks don't use calendars

It sounds like May15th is the start That said, I agree with Isla Chica that the last 2 weeks of May are not the best months

We went during the first week of June last year (2012). It seemed we had to search for awhile, and when we found one several other tour boats where floating around the same one. However, everyone got their turn and got plenty of time in the water with the massive creature. It was an amazing experience. I hear as the season progresses, more show up in the area and closer to shore than where we were, but I have only been that one time.

Good luck! Sounds like a great trip you have planned. I hope you'll be lucky with the whale sharks-it is a fantastic experience and they are absolutely amazing creatures Hope you'll report your trip back to us.
