WHALE SHARK TOURS - 1/19/2013 5:06:45 PM

My wife and I are going to be in akumal from 21 to 30 and planning to do a whale shark tour does anyone recommend a company and does anyone know if this might be to early in the season, I've read that the season starts june 1 but one company starts may 17 cerviche tours I think there called , and hoping we can see and swim with these amazing creatures.

Interesting

Some say May 17th start and some say June 1st

I always though June 1 was the norm each year

I'll see what I can find

I don't think they have announced the official start yet, someone usually posts it over on the IMI website. Last year it started mid-May, in 2011 it was in June. Depends when the sharks start to show up and the government sets the dates. Hope you get to do it.

We did the whale shark tour at the beginning of the season one year and had to search and search for the shark. When we finally came upon them, there were just a few in the area. I saw a trip report about a month later into the season and there were sooo many whale sharks. I wish our trip had been planned for later. We still thoroughly enjoyed the experience, but if I were going back, I would wait until the season was well under way. Of course, the whale sharks don't use calendars

the 21-30 of what month? You did not say. If it's May, good luck... Not a whole lot of W/S around yet then. You might be happier to wait until a time when you are there later in June - very early Sept, and almost GUARANTEED an encounter! We went VERY early Sept (1 or 2?) a few years ago, and it was the most amazing thing I have we've done. There were dozens in several areas near Isla Contoy. We went with Capitan Tony, of Isla Mujeres.

It sounds like May15th is the start

That said, I agree with Isla Chica that the last 2 weeks of May are not the best months

We went during the first week of June last year (2012). It seemed we had to search for awhile, and when we found one several other tour boats where floating around the same one. However, everyone got their turn and got plenty of time in the water with the massive creature. It was an amazing experience. I hear as the season progresses, more show up in the area and closer to shore than where we were, but I have only been that one time.

We went June 2012 also and stayed on Isla Holbox for several days before heading to Akumal. We left the isla on a boat with 4 other folks. We saw only one after a boat ride of about an hour. We were able to spend lots of time in the water with the shark and one of the times I was in the water with it, it was so close that it almost touched me with no effort on my part.

However, another boat left the isla at the same time as ours and they saw many of the sharks. They had a longer boat ride ..... over 3 hours and the water was rough. The folks on that boat didn't get near as long in the water with the sharks as the people on out boat.

The rest of our day was spent exploring and eating fresh ceviche in a seculded spot. We loved the experience, even tho' we saw only one shark. It was an intimate experience and glad we did it. Now on to the next journey................

Thanks everyone for your suggestion s , will be in Mexico from may 13 to the 31 , we are going to drive down to chetumal and boat over to ambergris caye for a few days , hol Chan channel , shark ally , then 2 days in bacalar , then 10 days in akumal , we both can't wait , lots of planning , and swimming with the whale sharks will be the cherry on top , so we are going try the end of may and cross our fingers , watched many vids on utube and only can dream we'll be that lucky that early in the season ..

Good luck! Sounds like a great trip you have planned. I hope you'll be lucky with the whale sharks-it is a fantastic experience and they are absolutely amazing creatures
