On 1/26 we are off to Akumal for our annual visit, and thought we'd explore some new places. On the Locogringo map there is a ruin near Coba called Ixhil. I can't find any info on it. Anyone been there or know about it?

Sorry to take so long to reply - I see you're off to Akumal today! I find Ixhil tantalizing - I first saw it on a map in 2007, and could find nothing on it other than a brief mention in a bicycle tour description that talked about the ruins and lagoon. I could see the lagoon on google earth, but the imagery was too poor to see much more than a blob. I looked for it in Feb 2008, and found the gate (locked) but nothing more. Cenote Nohoch Ha is just down the road, but nobody was there to ask, and my Spanish wasn't good enought to try asking around the local villages, so I gave up. Pictures of the adventure are here: http://eland.smugmug.com/Mexico/Ruins/Hunting-for-Ixhil/4854366_rMxPtN#!i=288978869&k=qTgGK6T I've since corresponded with the guy who runs the bicycle trips, who said: "I'm sorry to say that our experience with Ixhil is much like yours. I saw it on a map (which I find to be very strange), found it while exploring the newly paved road west of Coba, and got to walk around inside once, back in March 2006. The road had not been fully paved yet. We got in and looked around, but frankly there wasn't much to see. Apparently the paving of that road was to serve those ruins and they were and perhaps still are being excavated. They were also in the process of building a restaurant by the lagoona that is by the ruins. Since then, we've been back every year to see a locked gate, just like you. I haven't searched recently, but in the past I never could find any information about the ruins online, so I frankly have no idea what the status of them is. Asking around in the nearest villages might be your best bet." I've not been back to Mexico since, but I'm going to try again next time I go. What's fascinating me is that the satellite imagery is now better, and if you search for Ixhil in google maps, you can clearly see the signature of a sacbe leading off to the east-northeast, directly toward Coba. About 4 km towards Coba on that line there is a small cenote visible, with what appears to ba a ruin (or small building) next to it. The sacbe continues toward Coba, but becomes too faint to see. It would appear that whatever the site is, it was once connected to Coba. Hopefully next visit my Spanish will be better enough that I can ask around a bit... If you find out any more, please let us know! - Eric
