A couple of times I have run accross something that looks like a ships wheel, straight out from the beach cam. Does anyone know if it is real or fake? From its placement I have always thought it was fake, but the wife thinks otherwise.

I thought ships had propellers, not wheels, well, except for a few.

My DH saw it a few times when out snorkeling, he asked a fisherman, Francisco I think, about it, he told him it was legit and from the same ship that wrecked on the reef that left the cannons on the floor of the bay.

I'd be okay with it even if it was. Ship wrecks often make the best additions to a reef system, at least thats my limited understanding of it. The coral has something new to latch onto and the sea critters use the debris for housing. Cancun has done an amazing job of creating an underwater museum of statues and sculptures. I don't pretend to know a lot about it, but, from what I have read, as long as the wheel isn't made of iron, it is actually a positive addition to the reef ecosystem. Now the cannons, I guess they were probably made of iron, and the articles I read stated that the iron from sunken ships can quickly throw the ecosystem out of balance.

The problem with shipwrecks appears to be a particularly aggressive reef-dwelling creature called Rhodactis howesii, a type of sea anemone. When nutrients are abundant and there are no predators, R. howesii thrives. Unfortunately, it also eats coral, threatening the foundation of the ecosystem.

So, if it's planted, it may be contributing to the deterioration described by other divers and snorkelers that have more knowledge than I about the conditions of the reef. If it is truly the remnants of a shipwreck, I wonder if the effects of the iron are still even measurable.

Anyway, I personally think they are legit.

Most likely a plant... the Matanceros went down further south, near Chemuyil. Still very cool, I'll have to make it a point to look for it in July.

Interesting - it's not a wheel from a ship's helm, not sure what it is. The "spokes" seem to be finned at an angle like a turbine.

Sorry to burst your bubbles but that looks like a pully (or sheave) off of an air compressor. The spokes are the giveaway. They are indeed angled like a fan to direct cooling air toward the compressor as it turns. Looks like an old one though. Might be from one of the dive shops from their compressor.

That is not the ships wheel that I have seen in the past . The one that I have seen is the steering wheel off a ship. Probably 4 ft across.
