I am planning to go to Xcalak in May. Would it be easier to travel from Belize City to Xcalak or from Cancun? I would likely take a bus.

Where is your starting point? Most flights from the US to Cancun are quite a bit cheaper than to Belize City. From Cancun you would not have to deal with the Belize/Mexico border (customs, immigration) or pay the Belize departure tax. Also, you would need to somehow get from Belize City to Chetumal and take the ADO bus from Chetumal to Xcalak. I don't believe the buses in Belize are as consistent or as nice as the ADO bus would be from Cancun. Just my opinion but I would opt for the Cancun to Xcalak route.

Are you visiting Xcalak or staying there a night or two? If staying over, it is really best to have a rental car, as the bus drops folks off in town and all the hotels, etc. are north of town across the bridge, anywhere from 2km to 12km and taxis are not real widespread down there.

Made the trip by bus last year from Puerto Morelos. Took the ADO bus to Tulum and spent the night in the pueblo. Then the local bus to Limones and a taxi to Mahahual. Spent the night there and then took the very local bus to Xcalak. It runs once early in the morning and once late at night. It was cheap and easy, and we saw a lot and ate in some great spots. It could be done in a day, but it would be a very long day. If you stay at the XTC Dive Center you do not need a car.

Treefrog: My vote would be from Cancun. That way you can get the bus straight from the airport to points south. In Belize you would need to tranfer from the airport to downtown Belize City then get the bus north, then the hassle of crossing the frontier at Chetumal, then another bus etc. Unless you are looking to make it more of an adventure, stick to the same country. Thanks for your input. I think you and the others are right, stay in the same country. While I am looking for an adventure I'd like to keep the start of it as simple as possible.
