We took our now 15 yr old to England and Germany when he was 7 months old. A few things, is he breastfed? Has he started solid foods yet? (If not I will go into more details later) Personally I brought an "unbrella" stroller with us. You will need somewhere to put a child down some times, especially if eating and they do not have high chairs. They are light and easy to take along with you. They also fit in the aircraft, often you can take them right on board and put it in the overhead bins (so if they don't deliver it to the plane after you don't have a long walk with all you stuff and a child (this happened to us, not fun) Bring changes of clothes for the child and YOURSELF. The bonus of bringing enough diapers is that you will have room to bring things back home. Don't plan to do alot, just take it easy. At least you will not have a time zone issue (at worst it is 1hr, but that is nothing). Is he crawling? Will he wear a hat and possibly sunglasses. Most sunscreens are for 6 months and up, so you will have to have light clothing that will protect him at the same time.

You should ask my wife. She has to deal with me on every trip.

Umbrella strollers are nice, you can find them with a good canopy and a little basket underneath - kind of a "ramped-up" umbrella stroller. They fold up easily and compactly, and aren't as heavy as the big "everything-but-the-kitchen-sink" stroller. It's nice to have a stroller that has a reclining seat so they can fall asleep in it; at that age they're still napping frequently. My biggest piece of advice is to take multiples of everything. When we took our 9mo, we lost his sun hat on the second day - had to try to find something suitable on the resort, but nothing worked quite as well, wished we had brought double. We had brought two pacifiers, we lost one right away and after that we kept our eye on the other one, so afraid we would lose it! Wish we had brought three or four.... So if there's something you know you can't do without, bring several - it's so easy to misplace things when you're struggling with a fussy baby in a strange place (airports, restaurants, etc.) Have fun - I love looking back at the pictures we took on that trip!

Hi! We brought our son to Akumal when he was 9 months old...crawling, but not walking yet. I echo the sentiment about the stroller...it may be tedious pushing it on the beach, but I couldn't imagine NOT having it. You'll do a lot more walking than you think, and it'll be hot, so carrying the baby in a sling the whole time might be sweaty and difficult. Just sayin'. Ours was large (the kind that his carseat fit into), and they took it at the plane and gave it back to us when we landed. Made for an easy airport experience. The only downside of bringing babies is that they won't remember the experience, so take lots of photos! At 5 months I'm guessing your son isn't crawling yet, which is a GOOD thing! My son was crawling and very interested in putting sand in his mouth, which was not fun. Overall, though, it'll be a great experience for you. Good luck!

Just to add on a tip that we received and have made into our annual 'Coba Day' ritual. As you leave the Coba parking lot, go straight and to the left instead of turning right onto the main road. There is a Club Med on the lake that has a very reasonable lunch served next to the pool. And, since the place is always nearly empty, no one minds if you go for a swim after lunch. Great way to get in a good meal/beer/margarita and wash off the sweat from all that hiking. If you get to Coba at around 10, you're set for a perfect lunch and swim.

ORIGINAL: linoleum SORRY! THAT SHOULD READ 15 MONTHS!!! BIG DIFFERENCE!!!!!!! That is a big difference. OK bring lots of snacks if he is fussy, if not it might be a good way to have him experience new things. Bring along some plastic containers to bring extra food along with you on trips, or to have avail in between meals. Bring along a good sippy cup or three. I would still do the unbrella stroller, even more so at that age. And diapers/wipes If you believe in 'reins" a very english thing to allow a child to walk/run freely but still be under the parents control, they would be great especially if he runs towards danger (roads, pools) Bring a PFD or float vest for him, and have him wear it when ever near the water, Bring along some sand toys, if you don't want to bring them home you can leave it for the Library. When you son takes his afternoon nap, join him.

I agree with the advise to take a large stroller. We stayed at the Grande Sirenis last year with our 11 month old, and spent alot of time in Akumal. Having our large Graco stroller made life much easier because when our son would get sleepy, be it the afternoon or the evening, I would just recline the stroller backrest so he had a flat place to sleep and put the sunshade over him. This allowed us to continue what we were doing, with him in tow napping. Quite often we would feed him a early supper then walk around untill he fell asleep before sitting down for a relaxing supper ourselves. A sleeping baby doesn't cry ;) The larger stroller also was handy for the added storage for shopping bags / diaper bag / toys / wallet / cell phones / towels / cup holders / etc. Our airline didn't even charge us any extra to bring it or the playpen we used for a crib. We will be taking the same stroller for the same little boy this year (now 23 months) Have Fun! and don't worry about forgetting something, they have baby's in Mexico and you can buy mostly anything you may need.
