I'm going to be driving a rental car to Akumal several days before my friends fly in. What is the best way to pick up my friends from the Cancun airport? They will be coming from the US.

You really need to know which Terminal they come in, many US flights come into Terminal 3, but lots come into 2 also. Check which airline and look at the Cancun airport website for info.

As Sherry said, most major airlines come into terminal 3 but smaller lines like Jet Blue come in to terminal 2. Find that out first. Your car rental company should be able to tell you which airline comes in where. They have inside info! #2 check to make sure the flight is on schedule before leaving for the airport. I have had to wait several hours when planes are delayed. Other than that. There is parking close to each and the tiki bars are a good spot to meet. All terminals have them. There is curbside pick up areas but you can't park and hang out waiting long. If you find yourself with a couple hours wait time, Puerto Morelos is about 20 minutes from the airport and a good place to check out while killing time.

Penny , you sound like a good friend . It's a long drive back for you and a bit of a wasted day so I would consider a transfer for your friends while you chill on the beach . Even if you have to chip in a bit for them , I think it might be worth it . Taking this idea and cutting it in half could have your friends take the ADO bus , leaving every half hour or so from both terminals 2 and 3 , to PDC and you meeting them there . There is a square and a beach very near the ADO terminal for you to wait and still chill until they arrive . We just took this bus and it was almost as fast as driving ourselves , actually faster since we didn't have to do paperwork for a car . There is also a Terminal one which is mostly for private planes , we were told . I add that last bit because I hadn't known this previously . Cheers

Penny: I would second the transport idea. It can be a long drive back to Cancun from Akumal (especially if they come in during the busy time of day) and I agree with Juan Rojo - waste of good beach time. In addition, by the time you pay for gas there and back and parking, it is likely close to being a cheap to pay one way of transport (assuming you all go back to the airport at the same time.) Have them get booked with USA Transfers or another transport service. They can be out of the airport and down to Akumal using transport, while you enjoy your day and have a cold drink waiting for them. I have done this several times when not everyone I travel with arrives at the same time. It works just great!
