Oh the agony, we had to have a 19 day family Christmas in Grand Cayman this year, which meant no Mayan holiday until at least August. Our hearts bruised but not beaten we persevered and had a warm and lovely family get together over the holiday season. Okay so really not actually a hardship but we really do prefer Mexico.
We arrived after a easy flight with good old Air Canada, Halifax-Toronto-Grand Cayman. Not much to say about the trip down quick and easy arrived just after noon. We stayed the first week with the Sister in Law and her family. So no hotel reviews. We did eat out several times and I must say our favorite place is Sunset House/My Bar. Right on the ocean with fantastic sunsets, good eats, great drinks and superb atmosphere. During Christmas right across from Sunset House is the Bodden Twins Christmas display, which is spectacular.

We snorkeled almost daily. The snorkeling in Grand Cayman is pretty darn good. We did snorkels right off the beach at several different spots and still didn't hit all the places. Smiths Cove is a tiny wee place with small beach, some shade and a bathroom/shower facility. Snorkeling is good with loads of rock and coral formations.

Cemetary Beach is another great spot. No facilities but quiet and good snorkeling. Close to shore schools of fish surround looking for a free meal and farther out some nice coral heads.

Governor's Beach, better snorkeling but also more popular beach with no real facilites.

The Jackfish at Governor's are quite ballsy and swarm you and like to nibble on toes, nothing painful but still a little unnerving when surrounded by a swarm.
Rum Point is a great spot. It is resort like with sun beds, bathrooms/showers, restaurant/bar, rental equipment. Cruise ship folks fill the place on some days. Snorkeling is pretty good as well.

Spott's beach was great as well, but no real facilities.
The second half of our vacations we were house sitting for friends on south sound in a beachfront condo. Right in front of the condo is a bay very reminiscent of Akumal. It was surrounded by a reef and very protected. Whilst there we snorkeled out to a wreck just inside the bay and it was full to bursting with coral and fish, very healthy. We also had local turtles and rays. We didn't see them but supposed to have nurse sharks as well.

The last days in Cayman were busy trying to fit in last minute things. We went snorkeling off Paradise in Georgetown. It is a small restaurant with an area for entering for snorkeling. WOW swimming with huge tarpons and then out to the reef with amazing amount of fish. We had to cut short tho because we ran into jelly fish and were being stung. The waitress said it was very odd because wasn't the season for them.

We will definitely go back for another snorkel at Paradise next trip. It is right next to Eden rock which is supposed to be excellent as well.
Our last meal was at our other favorite restaurant Morgan's Harbour. Fresh fish right on the dock.

We also did an excursion. A night Kayak to a bioluminescent bay. It was fun but couldn't take photo, camera won't pick up the images.

In all great trip, loads of fun snorkeling, good food, loads of loving family time.
But we are already planning our next getaway to Akumal.

I am so sorry you had to endure that Christmas trip

Great report and great pictures. We stopped in Grand Cayman on a cruise once. We parked ourselves on Cemetery Beach. I would
love to go back but it was so $$$ way back when we were there; can't imagine what it is now. How fortunate to have family there.

Thanks for posting!

The costs would be prohibitive for us if it were not for family. It really is a great place but doesn't have the warm homey feel Mexico has.

Very nice, Akimbo.

I too stopped in GC on a cruise more than a few years back. It was right after a bad hurricane. Island was in pretty bad shape.

Would like to return some day.

Thanks!

The snorkeling looks amazing. Do you think your sis in law would mind if I showed up for a week or two? I clean house really well!

If I could afford it I would definitely want to take a trip there.

We had a rental car for our holidays. As small as the island is the different areas seem quite a ways apart. For those that stopped on cruise stopovers, it can be quite hectic getting transport to various places and then back to ship. Taxis are everywhere but not cheap.

Wow, nice snorkeling, and right from the beach! Thanks for the TR and the photos. Might have to check that place out some day.

It was such a beautiful fish to look at, don't know if I would want to eat it. Then again I like beef and they have big brown eyes. LOL

We went to Grand Cayman last summer....very nice (and pretty pricey) but I spent a lot of time missing Mexico!! Funny story....waiting for flight in Miami airport...hubby says of the gentleman standing right behind us " that's Guy Harvey!"...me, rolling eyes...."suuurrre it is".....guess if I had known he LIVES on Grand Cayman I would have not sounded quite so surprised , reading the inflight mag after we boarded, see pic and go " Holy carp, Guy Harvey is sitting three rows ahead of us!!! LOL!

Easy flight from the states too!
