So...we've decided to finally bring our 11 year old son because he's finally a strong enough swimmer for my comfort level. Been going to Mexico for years (Cozumel, Cancun, Playa, Akumal, Tulum etc.) We don't do all inclusive and didn't want to start now just because the boy is joining us. He is SO excited. We go budget too so this should be interesting. We're staying at La Hacienda Maria Bonita on 10th because we've always walked past some of the downtown hotels and wanted to stay at one. Minimum requirements were - food and bar on site and a small pool that we could still sit at, walking distance to the beach and decent reviews. I think it's a good choice. Anyone with experice bringing a kid there? Anyone know if breakfast is included?? Can't tell from my booking or the website. I know it's close to the CoCo Bongo but noise never seems to bother any of us when it comes to sleep. Renting a car and packing our snorkel gear (including jr's life vest.)

Looking for off-the-beaten-path ideas for the boy (and for us.) It's been a few years since we've been to Playa. Obviously we'll take him to Akumal to swim with the turdles, hit some ruins and mangroves...

May want to consider a sitter for a night so hubby and I could have a date night but we are a little (or maybe a lot) hesitant....thoughts?

I've recommended Aktun-Chen to a few people. We did the caves tour and spent a fair amount of time with the animals they keep there.. I think my daughter enjoyed seeing the monkeys best of everything. There's also Crococun Zoo just south of Cancun Airport. We did that last year since we had a few hours to kill before our flight home and thoroughly enjoyed it.
